righty'o
i got a 1994 TR magna 2.6 ( pretty sure its a tr ) , and it seems to be lacking some power, when its cold it seems to have no power at all between 1000 and 2000 rpm and it seems to only get to 150kph ( warmed up) ( itll could make 165 -170) if i had a long enough straight. i just dont think that this is performing to its ability.
1st question - any reasons for lack of power?
2nd and cheep mods to get a few more hp? ( perferably legal for a p'plater to drive)
3rd I havent worked out what the difference between the TR and the TS magnas are? ( im kinda new to the whole car scene ) ( hoping to learn some off this fourm)
4th anything else i should know ?
cheers

Hmm, "legal" "P-plater" "150km/hr"...
TS had the split grille, TR the letterbox grille.
TR had grey rear garnish, TS had the extra "lights" that weren't lights. But SE's etc had different rears, namely red garnishes.
Not sure on the dates, but pretty sure a 94 should be a TS.

Welcome to the club :)
To answer everything in order -
1. The lack of power could be caused by a few things. Worn distributor/rotor, blocked fuel/air filters, worn plugs/leads...
2. There are a few things that can give you a bit more power. A high flow air filter and straight through muffler are usually the first things on people's lists.
3. The main differences between the R and S series were the usual changes between models; grilles, tail lights, interior trim, wheels.

mine's a '94 model, and mine's a TR. look on your VIN number, if it says "6MMTR" then it's a TR.
1. Check that on park, it idles about 900-1000 RPM.On Drive, it should idle at about 700-800RPM. If it's lower, it'll run like a pig.
2. No point to mod the 4cyl, they're naturally gutless. I'd know, I also have one. If you must though, extractors with full exhaust system, high-flow air filter are about all you can do without going into MEGABUCKS.
3. The TS came with minor upgrades, where the TR had just a grey middle section on the boot, the TS was body coloured with two coloured lenses toward the sides. The TS also had a split grille, and got rid of the Elite (higher spec model).
Lastly, welcome to the club mate, have a great stay.

The high flow air filter is a straight swap, K&N is a popular brand. About the $80 mark.

Well I wouldn't call it gutless, ours drives alright, gets you to 100km/h plenty quick enough for a normal drivers needs. That said, I drive a 60kw Corolla more often than the TR, so it's gonna feel gutsy to me I suppose :P
Whats wrong with topping out at 160km/h or so? When are you ever going to need to?
The lack of acceleration when the engines cold just comes with age from the 2.6 I believe, ours tend to just rev its head off in first and second when its cold without putting the power on the road, never really bothered me, if you give it about a minute to warm up before you take off it'll go fine.
Probably want to flush the tranny, as its done a lot of k's and has probably been a while since the last service. If its been in need of a service you will notice the difference power wise when its done.

Oh and you can't really check Drive revs if its a manual like his profile says, but the idle revs should be the same.

mine accelerates fine, almost 100% as when it's warm, when it's cold. if that makes any sense...
EDIT- mine's got 180 before, tried to get it higher, but it just wouldn't go...

wasn't me...heavens no, i wouldn't be game enough to that to my own car...my cousin did it for me rofl! he wanted to know how far he could push it...he got his answer...hahaha
BTW- didn't realise it was a manual. rpm should be a little lower on manual...from what i remember. not by much though.
