Hey guys,
I was driving along the highway the other day when suddenly the "Check Engine" light came on. I took it into the nearest Mitsubishi Service Center to find out what the problem is, and to see if it was safe to drive. After running a few diagnostics, they told me the engine was running a bit "lean"? And that its a common issue with LPG on the 380.

Anyone else had this problem?

I have heard of an engine running a bit too rich, but never "too lean" ? I always thought that if the fuel (no matter lpg or petrol) is too lean, the engine wouldn't start?

An engine will run on a lean mixture, but it'll run VERY hot, and eventually melt the pistons.

Do you have the injected gas setup?

Do you have the injected gas setup?

Sure do. Its the sequential gas injection setup. The one thats designed specifically for this engine.

Hmm.

It could be a couple of things -

An ECU problem
An injector problem
An 02 sensor problem

The engine came from the factory on gas right?

Engine came from factory as "LPG Compatible/LPG Ready". Platinum edition bonuses and LPG option was dealer fitted.

So not exactly "from factory on gas", but warranty wise, its the same as if it was.

An 02 sensor problem

I thought the when runnign on gas, the 02 sensor isn't used?

Either way there must be some way to tune the system to pump more fuel.

On most newer type LPG setups the O2 sensor is used, most systems have lean cruise mode.

I would just take it to the dealer or their respected LPG installer and get them to retune it, ask for a dyno sheet to check air/fuel ratios as well.

I'm gonna take the car in later today and have them check the LPG system.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I also noticed a little bit of a gas smell after a hot day in the sun. Is this normal?
Could the metal hose clips be slightly loose from expansion during the heat?
Could a tiny leak in the system cause the engine to complain that the mixture is too lean? :doubt:

Is this the IMPCO sequential Gas conversion?

I had a problem with the check engine light coming on about every two weeks when the vehicle was new.

The dealer could not find the problem, the gas fitters were scratching their heads and no progress was made until another fitter told me of a batch of connectors that had two wires transposed.

With this info the gas fitter was able to fix the problems and now I have done 30,000 Ks with no problems.

Hope this information helps

thats weird cause i noticed mine starting to ping which means the engine might be running lean, but mines strait pertrol. i got a fuel card and only use shell petrol. just havn't had time to call the dealer.

I took the car in today and they checked the entire system, but couldn't find the cause.

One tech suspected that the gas convertor (the lpg to gas) was faulty, so they pulled that apart and rebuilt it. They said see how it goes, and if the problems re-appear, to bring the car back.

Needless to say, it is still somewhat of a mystery to me, but as long as I dont smell any gas inside the car, and the light doesn't keep bugging me, i'm happy.

TJ,
this might just only be a coindence, but I only ever use Shell AutoGas and Shell Petrol (V-Power) also... hmmm...
