G'day all Magna owners,
I've just joined the Club, but I've owned Magnas since 1993 - current one is a 2001 TJ exec.
Despite its very ordinary spec, it's actually a good drive, but has some problems for tall drivers (I'm 6'-5" tall). The thing it most desperately needs is a telescopic steering column.
Admittedly, I haven't had a chance to look at all the posts in this forum, but does anyone know if a Magna can be retrofitted with a telescopic steering column? If so, who's done it?
There seems to be heaps of good info on this site!
Best regards,
Ken

I'm about 6'4/6'5, and having verada seats i can lower the seating position, helps alot and i find it very comfortable.

Greetings to you, new member.
Try winding down the seat controls a fair bit (forwards and backwards tilt). My TE is basically down as low as it can go, and my head still touches the roof (6'3ish). Also, the steering column should be able to move up and down as well as out and in. Hopefully you'll be able to solve it.

They all have a tilt controll but ive never heard of anyone retroing a reach adjustment.
You could be the first, Its something ive thought about alot but never invested any time in it.

Thanks for the greetings, Gents.
I don't have many pictures of the car, I guess because its a plain white executive and there's nothing to distinguish it from the zillions of others like it.
I already have the seat down and the steering wheel up, but the wheel certainly doesn't move in or out. In fact, I don't know of any Mitsubishi car with telescopic steering adjustment.
Speaking of seats, the standard executive ones are too hard. Are the Verada ones noticably different, apart from the better trim?

Ken

interesting... I have no problems fitting into my 03 TJ, and I'm 6'9". the front and rear height adjustment on the seat help out a bunch, but for those recommending a sun roof, they actually give you less head room.
the only time I've had problems fitting in the car was when I was at Wakefield and the helmet didn't fit with the seat in my normal position. all I had to do was lean the seat back a little bit.
cheers,

Thanks, Screamin TE, that's exactly the sort of info I was hoping may be out there. Now, if a 1988 CA Lancer GLX steering column could be fitted to a Magna........
Your comments are very interesting, Wook. I have had to "lean the seat back a bit" in almost every car built from the '70s on, because the tendency after the late '50s has always been to make each new model "longer, wider, LOWER"! In fact the best modern vehicle for tall drivers is the Ford Territory, but that's another story. The really interesting bit is that you are significantly taller than me, yet you don't have a problem with reaching the Magna's steering wheel. It must come down to arm lengths - if I push the seat right back, and lean it back to clear my head off the roof, my arms have to be uncomfortably straight out to reach the wheel.

Ken

actually, 2.05m is quite acceptable as a Wookiee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wookiee). I'm not as tall as Chewbacca (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Mayhew), but I'm probably bulkier.

I happen to have an original Mitsubishi brochure for the TE. All versions, from Executive to Altera, are provided with a "6 Stage Hi-Tilt adjustable steering column". Certainly no mention of reach adjustment.

Another possibility is that some drivers like the "straight arms" approach, like F1 drivers. I prefer bent arms. In practice, I have to compromise and have the seat a couple of notches closer to the wheel, with knees poking up. Ideally, I'd like the wheel about 4" to 6" further aft.

"HAHA Wookie is 14" taller than me! 5'7" short arrsse.

Hmmm, not sure. A mate found out that He had that in His VS one day when we were driving, it was quite an interesting discovery, great idea for taller drivers!
And also, I think all third gens in particular have less headroom due to the seats, in my brother's TH I have to put the seat back a fair way. And I have no problems at all in my car.
The whole layout comparing 3rd gen and 1st gen is different. Seats feel higher, windscreen is designed differently making the roof a bit lower to start off with, console is closer (less room), it's all different.
Oh, and I'm 6'1.
Edit: The offical safe steering wheel reach practice is: in your normal driving position, you should be able to reach both palms of your hands over the top of the steering wheel, and that will be enough for good control of the vehicle in bad situations, it's good and I've tried it.
giving your hight in this sort of situation is only half the story. I'm 6 foot 5 and the only prob i have is that when im turning i cant get my hand past my left knee. but that can be fixed simply by moving my hand:shock: The thing is that most of my height comes from my torso, not my legs. so all i have to do is tilt the seat back. my friend is 6 foot 7 and he is all legs and he has a b***h of a time getting in and all that.
not much help in solving the prob but an interesting side note
