Hi guys,
The tint was catching in the 'second' strip for the rear windows, which Magnas apparently have and it was peeling off a bit. The rear window was 'unclear' not bubbling. I was told it was a defective lot of film...
Had got the original tint done by Solace so it was still under the 10 year warranty. The original film was UV100 (which apparently is the same as ash cool which is renamed from UV100)
Now, i ended up getting Midnight Express @ 35% VLT. Got the entire car done under warranty since if they have to do the rear windows and back, they do the entire car. Very professional people at Solace West Ryde, especially the franchise owner but yes but they would not tint the car at 20% which is what I badly wanted.....
He reckoned the reason Midnight Express is the 'darkest legal' is because it is actual 35% VLT and with addition to the original tint some windows have, it makes it darker. Can someone confirm that the Sports/VRX original windows are factory tinted?
He said they are careful putting this tint on some European cars. He also felt strongly about all the imports (RX330, Prado Grande, Kluger etc.) which by default have a ~20% VLT privacy glass and mentioned their associations fight with the federal laws to disallow this...
Yes, I can sense and kinda see the new film is slightly darker but I still wanted 20%
Anyway, all done now.....
Any idea on what the Midnight Express tint normally costs to get done?
Hows it look? I'm a big fan of tinted windows.

Looks quite nice.
$395 is the RRP but there are coupons and dockets available to bring it down to ~$300
Got any pics to show this off? $300 is pretty good, free is better :P

You have to get it done, makes a huge visual difference to the car.
Some folks on the forum here have got it done for $150 - $200, do a search.

if you want ur insurance to pay out a claim each and every time, then yes ;)
but i'm surprised u couldnt find an alternative shop to do illegal tinting... i know of a few here in perth just off the top of my head who can do 5%-35%, decals, colours, reflective etc etc
Midnight Express is 35% VLT, you really want that? :doubt:
What exactly is the %? Is that the visibility % looking in, or the % the visibility is dropped by looking in?
I've never really understood tinting terms.

i think its how much light goes through, so 5% tint has alot less light go through than 35%, etc

Can someone confirm that the Sports/VRX original windows are factory tinted?
Never Mind mate, ill answer this question for you, seing as no-one else wants to
YES - all 3rd Gens have a factory tinting on all windows except the front screen.......but it is nothing to get excited about, its only very slight, barely noticable.......and its only purpose is to reduce UV ever so slighty.......its only something like 3%....so if you had 35% tint pout on, it would only end up being the equivelant of 32% tint

Thanks mate which is why maybe I feel the tint is still not dark enough :)

Hi again guys,
Picked up a newish car for the missus today. It is a Silver Yaris.
It needs tinting bad :D
I recall that a year or so ago someone on this Forum recommended a mobile guy for tinting in Sydney who roughly charged ~$200 and used 3M film? Cannot find that post...
Can someone recommend anyone in Sydney for tinting. I would have gone back to the mob above but as mentioned before, they won't do 20%
Thanks

just to clarify things the "Tint" that comes with 3rd Gens are called "Showroom Tint" thats what its suppose to be called... its barely anything...
$320 to get Midnight Express on my wagon, Normally $420 or something.
I'm not sure why you need it any darker, unless you're some kind of stalker and you don't want other people being able to see in, or not being able to see OUT at night. :P
Not to mention, defect, and problems with insurance claims. :)

to me why spend the money on tint where people can clearly see into your car at night. i.e. people walking by, see a nice HU there, see a nice gauge there, see a wallet, YOINK GONE.
when if you get it much darker you can pretty much leave anything in your car at nighttime and no-one can see in. so you can leave that HU in and your wallet there and no-one is any wiser.

Except they presume your hiding something. Lets face it, if theres 35% of light going through in the dark, they're not gonna see **** anyway. Believe it or not the stock factory tint on our TR is enough to stop people from seeing our headunit easily at night. The corolla is only a tad darker and you can't see **** through that at night. 35% would be heaps darker than the corolla is.

can depend on the interior, black interiors will always be harder to see in than light interiors (light reflecting, blah blah), so if you get darkest legal, and you have a black interior (like my sis's mazda 3) it'll look alot darker, unless you look straight through from 1 window to the other

But people can't see into your car at night with darkest legal....

they can if they look hard enough and you dont have a black interior.
hell they can see in during the day with 35%!
go down to 20% town and they wont see in day OR night.
good for picking your nose at the traffic lights :D
Personally I'd rather have the lighter tint and risk someone seeing my head unit than having insurance run away on me if I ever had an accident. Without a doubt if they work out the tint is too dark they'll claim impaired visibility and then your screwed.

what if you hit someone from the front? got nothing to do with side windows

They'll still use it, anything they can use to get out of a claim. I wouldn't risk it myself.

When you spend $3K or whatever (any high price) on a stereo you want any form of protection possible to save your assets being stolen.

Maybe an alarm then? :P I reckon the majority of people who see your car around paul would be able to guess that the stereo in it is worth in the thousands, maybe in a car that looks bog stock with a $2k stereo, but one thats modified to hell inside and out, people know theres valuable **** inside anyway lol
You can have your 20% tint and I'll get my 35% tint thank you! Now all I gotta do is get the windows to put the 35% tint on lol

while not on topic - the best form/deterant (i have found anyway) from stopping people spying your stereo system, is to remove the h/u facia panel - and take it with you wherever your going (dont do what most people do.. and leave it in the glovey!)
most high end units have detachable faceplate.
re the too dark tint and insurance if you run into someone - if they can find anything thats not quite legal on the car, they will get out of the claim, leaving you with the bill for it.
dark tint = great
legal tint = not as great/dark... but legal
could probably go a few % points over the 'legal' but not much and it depends if they look hard enough to see if it is legal..

When I bought the beast I asked for the darkest legal tint as the deal clincher! I got it.

I think Wagons must be tinted!

The best way would be to buy equipment that doesn't stand out, so don't go buying Green 6x9's for the parcel shelf, or a bright silver headunit if your dash is all black (you can take the faceplate off anyway though). Then it'd be things like alarms/alarm stickers, then tinting.
Nothing is going to stop someone from breaking into your car, things like advertising the alarm system in your car is simply a way to say don't break into my car, break into the one next to me instead. Your never going to stop people doing it period, you just need things to push people away from your car. Window tinting won't make them hesitate for a moment, if they know theres something in there (like they heard you pull in with the stereo thumping), or they just get the hunch, tinting won't worry them because it doesn't make additional noise does it.
I know someone who hard their car parked in a motel car park one night where every car got broken into simultaneously except his, the only thing he could put it down to was the stickers on the windows saying there was an alarm fitted (no alarm thoughlol), it put them off because they presumed it'd make a lot of noise, not because they couldn't see anything inside. Mind you that was about 15 years ago too.
