Hey guys, I am currenlt trying to source a gearbox for my 3.5L TJ. However the only boxes which appear to be popping up are from 3.0L TE,TF. My question is mainly directed to those who are running these boxes with a 3.5L engine, however feedback from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

My Question Is:

Have you had any problems running the supposedly weaker box with the bigger engine?

Is there any difference performance wise between the two? i.e. will I be settling for less with a 3.0L gearbox?

Does the age of the box matter much, how many kms is too many, and what would need replacing if the box has too many kms?

Thanks heaps.

Matt

3 litre box has a shorter 1st gear ratio so you'll spin the wheels even more in 1st. If it's really old the synchros in 1st and 2nd may crunch. Means a rebuild for the box if thats so which would be too expensive anyway. Just try and source a TJ manual box or something.

the synchros in my TE are a bit crunchy in nearly all the gears, but thats only if a change pretty quickly!

Depends on the km's on the box and how it was treated previouslly. My 3.0L box is still smooth and not showing any signs of wear, had it for a while now.

Talk to Jamie85.

He just completed a manual conversion on his TJ series 2 using a TF box and couldn't be happier.

He is happier that a pig in s*it !!!

I had my 3l box in my 3.5l TH now for about 6 months, and its working fine. 1st gear is shorter, and spins the wheels way to easy, but oh well. Practice makes perfect.

Most wreckers will give you 3 months warranty on the boxes, in case something is wrong with it. It shouldn't take you long to figure out if its screwed or not. Good luck.

I paid around $3300 for my whole convertion kit, which includes everything that's needed to convert plus new clutch and labor. Not sure why they would want that much for a 3.5l box.
Just call them again :D

More wheels spins the better! I'm sure calling up a wreckers could get you a good price they might fit it as well.

yes i used a 3.0lt gearbox with 3.5lt motor and i love it i have no problems with it yet and changes gears nice and smooth and i also noticed that i have a really big 2nd gear it takes a bit before you have to change to 3rd.

If you think 2nd gear is long....you should drive an S13 silvia! 120K's in 2nd...lol

Get the syncros and output shaft bearing changed and you'll be ok. The gearbox shop I went to were amazed at how large the gears and bearing were compared even to rear wheel drive units. If you're nervous you can always cryotuff the gear set :D

Probably get 80kph easily in 2nd.

Don't get my wrong, But couldn't that seriously stuff up the gearbox?

Many drag racing teams cryotreat their engine and drivetrain components with big improvements in durability and reliability. Some components that were routinely discarded after each meet are now seeing several race meets before needing replacement. Costs something like $4 per kg of material so it's very good value insurance imho.
