ISC (t think), idle speed controller , it could be that, or try turnig out the little screw on the manifold that ajusts the idle as well

Either that ISC, which could be gone, could also be the battery quality (charge rate)

Is the battery old or new? have you changed it since you have owned it?

Is there any noise comming from the car when it turns on? Or the revs simply goes up then straight away drops and the car dies?

Does it die more in D that it does N?

For example, if you start it up and put it in D (with park brake on), does it stall faster than it would if you did the same in N?

if i start it up,then i put it in R the idle goes down like any normal auto and the if i put it in neutral it goes up then D goes down, its idleing fine now how is tht? it went from running like a pig to just fine

You haven't just done some electrical work, disconnected the battery? That would reset your ECU and it'd have to relearn the settings to keep your idle happy.

Try throwing on different loads at idle and see how it reacts, eg, high-beams, steering, aircon, etc. If it drops and then picks up, to me that would show the ISC is OK, as it's at least trying to compensate for the new load.
The base idle setting might be too low and need to be reset. Pretty sure mine is too.

PS. Perry, I don't think on the V6 changing the idle is as simple as turning the screw, you need to bypass the ISC system otherwise it will automatically try to counter what you have done. There's a method to it, but I've never found out exactly what it is; something about shorting a plug in the engine bay to earth I think.

So when you start it and it keeps stalling, if you put your foot down as you turn the key does it spin up or just stall still?

Our TR has been doing that, we had to keep the revs at 3000RPM or so for about a minute until it smoothed out, otherwise it would pretty much stall on idle, if we put it in R or D it would just stop. Ours turned out to be a really fine crack in one of the cylinder heads, which let water into cylinder 2. Getting fixed as we speak.

I had the exact same problem on my KR. It turned out to be the distributor cap; the contacts were pretty much worn away. A new cap and rotor cost me about $60.

Dead easy on the 2nd Gens. Unlpug all the cylinders, the coil and the tacho from the cap and loosen the 2 screws around the base of the distributor cap, lift it up carefully and that's that.

If you're going for a second hand cap, look for one that has plenty left on the contacts, and when you find one that looks good, check it over for cracks and then scrub the contacts with emery paper.

Yeah fairly cheap and easy to replace, good to see what condition the rotor is in also.

and is 170 4 a full tune good??

Neg, when I had the verada, and it had issues :s not sure what it was with, but before I stacked it, i was quoted $140 from profix for a service and tune... but then again eh, thats profix...

But at the same time, North East Mitsu and a few othere mitsu dealerships told me you can't really do a tune up on them because it's all done by the ecu... so 6 to 1 half a dozen to theother really...
