View Full Version : TH Magna center console woes

G'day everyone,
I'm ashamed to say i've spent over 7 hours trying to get a new head unit in and working in my TH Magna.
It seemed oh-so-simple when i disassembled and removed the old one, but after wiring up the new one; (which took 4 hours because the active was not active for some stupid reason and 3 fuses blew) reassembling the bits is tedious, frustrating, and i'm not clear on how to do it. I am not aware of many people who are active on these forums that drive TH's... If you drive one or have experience with the typical console in the TH any advice would be very much appreciated.
Or if anyone has a guide that would be fantasic!
(I have already seen the guide for second gens, mine is different)
Basically i'm most confused about how the two metal brackets go in, why the screws that go into the bracket and hold it in place WON'T BITE, and how the A/C controls fit in relation to the brackets... gah, its complicated. If you would like some pictures, just ask, but any advice or links would be appreciated. :)
there was a guide on here once upon a time i think. i used it when i put a HU in a mate magna. not sure where it has gone but it had detailed pics and everything. was really good

Usually pays to get all the info before you attack your car. Hopefully you haven't done to much damage. 7 hours is a really long time, you must be really patient... :D

i'm wishing it was only 7 hours. We're going into Day three of having my car a mobile toolbox and i estimate i've been in the thing for about 12 hours all up. Problem after problem.
First off, for no foreseeable reason in this universe, the Red power cable that EVERY head unit that had been in this car was attatched to became dead. It took an auto elec to figure that out- fortunately he was a champion. He charged me a large double quarter pounder meal. :D
Secondly the screws that pioneer supplied for the head unit will not fit into the head unit
Thirdly half the screws that are in my metal brackets for the magna have nothing to bite into; the clips are gone
Fourth, after sorting that, the center will not sit on square; it always pops out at the top!
And fifth, this is a bloody mystery to me. The headunit powers on but no sounds come out of the speakers. I suspect the Amp. Theres a power cable and four audio cables running from the unit to the amp. And for some reason the Amp is not turning on. It's got a power LED on the side that doesn't light up. I've checked the power cable with a multimeter- it's consistent.
And sixth- the face plate is already covered in bloody scratches.
Next time i'm going to throw 200 at Autobarn to just do it for me and take all this ****.

Solved that problem, have more now :D
This was a preowned car. The previous owners stupidity continues to cause me involuntary eye muscle twitches.
There were two wires in the earth pin on the side of the amp. One was a little blue one. I Don't know where this little blue one goes, but it dissapears into the depths of the dashboard and goes noway near the head unit. I unplugged this stupid wire and voila, i have music.
Music with buzzing.
Turns out the Grounds are in different places. One is behind the head unit on a screw and the other is under the passanger chair near the amp. I could either buy a Ground loop isolator for 40 bucks or i could spend about a dollar extending the head unit ground and putting it in the same place as the Amp's ground.
Oh, and for the love of god i can't reassemble the center console. Neither can 5 of my friends, and the auto electrician can't reassemble it either. In the end autobarn offered to reassemble it THURSDAY next week for $80. He said he's seen worse than a TH console but Many many many better.
Day four has elapsed.

may not be the grounds, are your rcas for the amp running alongside the power cable? that may be causing the buzzing sound... if so, seperate them asap :P

:bowrofl: i would never do anything with car audio again if one of my first experiences was like this!
At least you are giving it a go though. Pity none one could help you out. Funny thing is sometimes the console never seems to sit right after it gets taken off...

I don't have the electronic controls just the standard, its a TH magna, I'm finding it impossible to get back on, keeps popping out between controls and air vent :S, could there be something im not doing right? It just won't "CLICK"

Stop the clock at 4 days. I've got it working to a standard i deem acceptable; that is; perfect.
The RCA's were running alongside the power cables, as expected. (If there is something the previos owner can do wrong he probably has!) I seperated them, and ran a new earth cable under the carpet to the same earth as the amp. Voila, no buzzing. Only that beautiful "Speakers ON and ready to EXPLODE" sound.
The only slight irritation is the center console keeps popping out at the top left corner. For the amount of effort i think it will involve to fix this i'm going to throw the 80 autobarn wanted at them and say "MAKE IT STOP DOING THAT!"
But other than that it's gorgeous.... Having 160 songs on one cd is a beautiful thing!

sounds to me like you broke a clip on the console... $80 wont fix it, new clip and superglue tho should... ;)

Thats not good. If AlexW is having the same issue...
Maybe theres a very good reason they changed the design of the console straight after TH....
I wonder if any of the other models consoles will fit in mine instead...
