hey everyone, i got a 5spd TE magna, and have been noticing a problem with it,
sometimes when i am parked in first gear or neutral or whateva, and then i go to reverse out, the gear-stick won't go into reverse,
after about 1 or 2 minutes fiddling with it and trying to force it, it will eventually go into reverse
i was wondering if anyone knows what could be wrong with the gearbox, and if it is a common problem or not,
thanks everyone

have you tried
a) put clutch in
b) put clutch out
c) put clutch in again
d) now try put in in reverse
if you come to a standstill, and just suddenly want reverse, i dont think it works cos of the synchro's (correct if wrong)
so try putting your clutch in n out a few times =) works a treat for me 8)
don't worry about that. My TS does that as well, as does my dad's Toyota hilux. Sometimes I have to fiddle around to get into first and reverse. Try putting it in neutral and then shake the stick left/right a bit. Then try pressing the clutch pedal in and out a few times, while moving the shifter into first and then reverse (while the car is turned on and with the handbrake applied and the clutch pedal pressed down, of course) It also occurs sometimes in my mate's 2002/3 Pulsar.
Obviously you shouldn't release the clutch while in 1st/reverse or you'll feel like you've swallowed a can 'o kangaroo juice (or most likely, stall).
Oh, and if it's been a particulary nipply night (ie. cold) you may find that the gearbox can be slightly stiff and require a firm shove.
IF however, it flatly refuses to go into reverse, then I suggest you get yourself to a mechanic for a checkover.

My TS does that as well,
So does mine. Putting it into 1st before reverse usually helps.

Most reverse do not have a syncro.
I would look in 2 areas, Clutch or the gear oil
One box that has the syncro in the reverse is the astra/vectra, These are a pain in the a$

thanks for the replies all
i think it may be the clutch or hopefully the gearbox oil as some people have said
also, this stubborness of not going into reverse also happens after i pump the clutch, select first, wiggle it etc.
but sometimes it just easily slides into reverse ?
weird ay
and sorry nomadic, i think i prefer my type of transmission hehehe

I get that problem sometimes too...but only once and then I just do the clutch thing and it's fine.
RPW short shifter time methinks :D

Change your gearboxoil.
Reverse gear is a straight cut gear so itis a little harderto get in, but don't stress, double clutch itlikemost people have reccomonedand it will be fine.
As for "if it was auto this would not be a problem" well, if it was auto there would be 1000's of other problems seeing its an auto made by mitsubishi :)

This is a commen problem and i have the same problem with my magna and you all know I never thrash or stress my manuel gearbox :D
Correct oils do help but I find that i place my car into 5th gear first and then put it into reverse and 90% of the time this works.
It just seems that reverse is a little difficult to get on the magna but more of a slight annoyance than anything else.

Don't worry.. I don't think I've ever driven a car which didn't do it AT LEAST once.
It's just the speed of everything in the deep dark area know as a "Gearbox". Sometimes everything is just not in "sinc" .
It's kind of like shiftin gears without the clutch... if everything is spinning at the right speed, then u can easily shift without even grinding.
(I'd just like to thank my workplace for allowing my access to several work utes for experimentation in this, and several other general clutch-abuseing areas!)

thanks everyone
i understand what u r trying to say , and beleive me, i have tried all of those things, i had 4 people in the car (who all drove commodores and knew how to fix every problem relating to cars  ) and they all tried with their various methods , but failed, so we pushed it backwards hehe, then i got it home, the next day i started it up again, and it easily slipped into reverse,
but i thought i may aswell change the oil anyway hehe
gives me something to do on my break anyway hehe
thanks for the replies though guys
