I have a mitsubishi magna, 91 modle. 4 cylinders. i just bought it about 3 months ago and i have been spending money on it to get it road worthy and registered. One day i was driving and it got stuck in 2nd gear. i got home and didnt drive for a few days then when i drove it again it was fine. then just the other day i was driving again and it got stuck in 3rd gear. it has only happened twice, and other than that it is good. i took it to a tansmission specialist and they said it is a auto electrical problem but then an auto electrician told me that maybe its only doing it because it sat undriven for a while. i got a code of 14tps off the transmission guy. im extremely confused. does anyone know what the problem may be or does anyone know a way to fix it without getting a new transmission as i am a poorper :-)
Thanks
Sharna

If the code is a TPS code, it is due to the sensor being out of specification. Check it is adjusted right and test it using an analog multimeter. If there are points where the resistance doesn't change smoothly or there are points where you get no reading, the TPS will need replacement. They are about $15 from the wreckers or so to replace.
The TPS is located on the front of the throttle body and is a black, round thing with 2 screws on either side of it.

Howdy and welcome.
First of all, im assuming its an auto ???
I guess thats the error code that the engine control unit gives out I spose if you get a workshop manual for your car you can find out what it means, or you should just be able to bring it or even just ring mitsubishi and ask what the error code is.

Thanks to all of your responses. I hope it is just the tps sensor then. i am absolutley useless with cars tho so i will have to get it done at the shop.hopefully wont cost too much. i have another question though. When i was getting quotes to get my car roadworthy i had a few mechanics tell me that these cars are bad and cost heaps of money to maintain and basically that i should just dump it cos i'll have nothing but trouble with it. is that true?

Thats what they say about children, But your not going to "get rid of" your children just becuase they might be expensive to upkeep?
What a stupid comment by your mechanic...
Just the timing belt change every 100K whats so expensive about that...

First off welcome to AMC.
I dont know why your mechanic would have told you that because magnas are very reliable cars even the 1st and 2nd gens hold together quite well, of course things will go wrong considering the age of the car but if looked after properly it should last you a long time.
Enjoy your stay
