Hey Guys,

Just wondering how much would it cost to get (supply and fit) a 'better performance' extractor?

and does only changing the extractor improve performance??

thanks

Sorry guys

I think what i am trying to ask is:

How much is it to get new performance exhaust system?
-header
-cat convertor
-high flow muffler.........

and are they worth doing on a 1st gen?

thanks

you can get a set of headers from the wreckers cheap and then get a set up from the exhaust shop. but i would say it made a huge difference in my 4cly. works better in manuals as well....

Whether it's worth it depends on the condition of the car and which RPM range you are aiming for. If you want low down torque, but don't really care about the rest of the range, stick with the stock exhaust (2" through, 1.75" end), as enlarging the system decreases low-end torque. If you want mid-high power u could look at 2 - 2.5 complete exhaust setup, but you should not go any larger than this, as the engine performance will severely suffer. Remember that larger exhausts does not necessarily mean better, as engines require some backpressure to operate correctly (despite what some may make you believe). The smaller the size the faster the exhaust gases can move out the exhaust, although obviously too small and there is not enough flow. Choosing the right exhaust system is all about finding the right balance between flow and getting the gases out at the desired RPM range. Performance exhausts in general do have a nicer sound than the stock systems too, which does help cover up the typical "whine" of the balance shafts in the first gens (which is a really awfully horrid sound!)

Also to consider is what work has been done to the engine? The best exhaust in the world isn't going to make a difference to performance if the engine isn't up to scratch. You will want to add extractors to the engine, as anything is better than the stock headers, which are also prone to major cracking due to poor casting. You must also consider whether you plan to do things like putting on a turbo-charger, as this will necessitate larger exhausts in preference to smaller ones. There are other mods you can do to the air intake, fuel system, heads, block etc. which will also affect the performance; especially with the intake which is severely limited in the first gen design and starves the engine of the air it really needs.

Definitely ask yourself these questions before you start looking for exhausts, as you will be disappointed otherwise.

when i got my extractors they were about 360 installed, got quoated 260 for a 2" str8 thru sports exhaust supplied and installed. my zetti cannon was 198 supplied and installed. the extracters alone made a huge difference, dropper 4-5 seconds of 0-100. got an extra 500 or so revs aswell
