Hey guys I recently sold one of my amps and before selling it, i tested it out because it was sitting in my cupboard for a while.

The guy i sold it to is a mates mate and has been saying that it just doesnt work him and has asked him to ask me to have a look at it.

I have connect it up to a computer power supply but and when i turn it on, the power LED is VERY dim and you can only see it when you cup your hands over it and i get no sound from it at all.

I know for a fact that it was working when i sold it to him. Anyone know what could be the problem ?

Amp is a JL e1200.

Also i have hooked plenty of stuff on this psu before ( car related ) and its worked fine.

something wrong with the power delivery, could be a short, could be something blown from incorrect installation, how much does your mates mate know about installs?

My mates mate knows **** all and has been trying it himself for a while.

I had a feeling what it could be but i didnt want to mention it. I opened it up and it was a big capacitor near the power that has blown. The electrolyte is dry and has splatter on the inside.

I have a feeling either he reversed the polarities ( would it cause this ? ) or his alternator is throwing to much voltage at it. Im not sure.

If it wasnt Sunday i could have just bought a new cap and soldered it in.

Yeh somethings caused it to blow, over voltage or reversed polarity can cause it (though would have thought the amp would have a protection circuit for this).
Check the voltage coming out of his alternator, if it's fine you know he's installed it wrong, either way it's not your problem :P.

That happens to the Audison amps if you hook up the power and grounds in the wrong holes. You blow an input cap, however they still work but it has a huge amount interference and sound like when you have your RCA running with your power cable..

My mate confirmed that he had connected it backwards so he knows it was him who blew it. I offered to fix it for him and told him to get it installed by someone that knows what they are doing.
