im so bloody sick of this stupid piece of crap! (i dont really mean that! i still love you magwgn!) its had a problem with something electrical on start up for ages. then it started chewing through the fuel for no apparent reason. then it wouldnt start at all the other day so stupid me tried to clutch start it down a hill but it turned out to be again electrical so in doing so i think ive stuffed the clutch or done something bad. it just made a whiring sound and still wouldnt turn over. since then its been running rough as guts with absolutely no balls at all and now has a loud tapping noise coming from the front bank. meanwhile its still sculling petrol like bob hawke with a yard glass, and its got me well beat. this has all happened only two weeks into my new job, so its going to the mechanics first thing this morning (in like 6 hours) so so much for seeing any of my money for a while! dam it why does this sort of stuff always happen to me at the worst times!!!!! AAARAGARAGAHJAHAGARARGFAGHAHHHA! ok steams vented. im cool now. ill let you all know the damage when i find out.

The noise would be a lash adjuster which is so will cause a valve not to open properly thus the bad running and sculling fuel. I had this exact problem in my KR Verada I owned a few years back.

When you are unable to start the car does the engine crank or is there just nothing?

nothing at all. just a click. the mechanic told me the noise is probably a hydraulic lifter and the problem is the electrics. hes changing the plugs and leads and he reckons the oil is causing the noise so hes changing that. what else should i be asking him to do? im getting platinum plugs all round.

i got my car back this afternoon and OUCH!!!! $440 later most of the problems have been fixed but its till got quite away to go yet. it turns out i was the victim of a very dodgy tank of petrol. a mistake i will not be making again. its clogged everything up, and has made quite a mess. i also had an oil problem that was effecting the lifters and the mechanic said if left much longer it may have stuffed the whole engine. it was very bad! i also have a completely stuffed cat which needs to be replaced. cv boots need changing. and on top of all this it still has the electrical problem on start up which has been around for ages i have to get fixed. so all in all it was quite a bad day, but good at least that i now know what needs to be done and it is running a lot better. its still abit sluggish because he doesnt want to change the filter or clear the injectors until all the bad fuel has gone and the treatment has all worked but its alot smoother than before, and the loud tapping has gone. i know i could have done alot of this myself and i know it was probably a bit steep but i just wanted to be rid of all the problems and be sure of the outcome. ive still got a fair bit of money to spend until its all done, for which ill do the timing belt and seals as well, then hopefully i wont need to worry about it for quite a while. heres the invoice, but please dont tell me if i got jipped coz its to late now so i really dont want to know. im just happy its fixed. oh and i got sexy new leads and a clean engine bay, so at least it looks good now. so it wasnt all bad.

Is it true that you shouldnt attempt to clutch start a car that has a cat converter? In my TR V6 hand book is says never do it as it will damage the car converter..

Every car has a cat conv. so forget the manual :)

Also thanx for the list of things you got done, im getting the TS serviced very shortly so i will tell the mechanic a few things off the list :)

Man Just looking through your bill, first of all you did not pay for the Platinum plugs, prob did not get them.
I can of TB cleaner for a TB, wow I use about a quater of a can.
All up for what you got, no offense and you did state it was probably steep but I would be finding another mechanic as this guy is more than steep.
The only things bad fuel will clog, providing your filter is working is the filter and the gauze filter in the tank. With bad fuel it was that bad I would drain and clean the tank, replace both the gause and the front fuel filters and you would then ultrasonic the injectors. All up would have been a similar cost to what you had done.

thanks madmagna. i figured as much but like i said it was so bad i was happy to just drop it of and forget about it, although i was still shocked when he gave me the final price. he told me he didnt use platinum plugs coz the rear bank was easy to get to plus they would have cost alot more. im going to have the float gauge thing in the tank checked next time to because my petrol gauge is up and down like a womans moods so should they replace the gauze at the same time. he wants me to go back in two weeks to do the filter and injectors, and quoted me 260 for it. for that price would that be ultrasonic?? anyway, like i said, i know it cost alot and i could have done alot of it myself, but for the extra time and huge amounts of stress it would have caused me, plus no garauntee i was actually going to fix anything im just glad its done and is running properly again.

For that price it would want to be ultrasonic. I use the same plugs as KB, iridium, have been very good so far.
Replace the gauze, or more commonly known as a "sock" in the tank, did this to mine ages ago and when I removed it it was as blocked as.

Well at least your problem isn't as bad as what happened to my dad's VT commo. It only had done less then 5k (back then) and the car was sluggish as hell due to two of the six cylinders to be dead. Took about a week to get that fixed, apparently the engine had to be majorly overhauled. So since then we've been more cautious with what fuel we buy.

Just looking at that invoice you got, seems you only need new CV boots? If so, don't bother changing the CV's unless they are defective. CV boots are cheap'ish, boots = $30, labour = $50. Can be cheaper.

well i wont be having any of these problems again. a really good mate of mine is a head mechanic at mcgraths, but between the urgency of needing mine fixed mid week, and i was a bit uncomfortable about asking him to fix it, i took it to this other bloke. well i went and saw him on the weekend and i was quite annoyed. turns out all he does on weekends is work on mates cars, and he said he could of done mine for sure, so from now on ill be saving alot of money on servicing and repairs. in a week or two ill be geeting a new timing belt and cam seals, new fuel filter, cleaned injectors(im gonna swap cars with him for a day and he will ultrasonic them at his work), and a few other things all for $100 and a case of piss, plus cost price of all the genuine mitsubishi parts. woohoo! and he can get any parts at cost so ill be hopefully getting my brakes and suspension done very soon aswell.
