Based on the workshop manual I am look at, it would. Unless of cuz you can cut the same plastic door flappy thingie that hides your air bag until you need it.

Just make sure you disconnect your battery well in advance... Once the battery is disconnected, you can start to remove the dash and airbags safely.. I suggest you search on AMC for a workshop manual, there is one floating around on here (or a link) somewhere... It will help you.

I wouldnt do it personally.
Too risky I'd say.

how EASY is it for a professional to respray the dash without removing it, or do they have a better chance of removing the air bag and putting it back in safely???

If you're going to deal with airbags and the like, take it to a crash repair place, they will have spraybooths and **** and are licensed to replace airbagged cars... Dunno if they'll agree to paint your dash, what exactly are you painting on it? Most of the crap is removable, don't try painting the vinyl, you'll regret it in 2 months time.

Ive removed an airbag in an EL before.
pretty easy, just undo 2 bolts on the wheel and its out, then just needed to undo the electrical connection.
Might wanna grab the 2nd gen PDF workshop manual and have alook through that.
I have seen some painted dash's before and they look pretty good.
i however would just swap the entire dash over with a 2nd gen one.
or if you wanna be cool, a 3rd gen one!!

Is there a 2001 Verada getting around with a black dash (would love to see one before i got it) or do the GTVi Dashes fit the verada???

Looks like he wants to be cool lol
All things are possible, however some of which are illegal... You don't want to tamper with your airbags, possibly forsaking your safety for some minor cosmetic upgrade.
