hey guyz,

I am very confused between CV shaft, CV boot, CV joint and the whole CV thing.

Here is the thing: On the left side of my car, I can see the 'black' covering on the CV has cracks on it, but the grease hasn't leak out yet.

So, what do I need to do?? What needs to be replace??

thanks so Much

Ken

that rubber black thing is the "CV Boot" its the cover on the cv joint
alot of garages will want you to change it for it to be roadworthy it should cost maby $10 $15 but it'll be hard to change it

If the grease isn't leaking out of the boot you don't have to fix it yet, but keep an eye on it. If it starts leaking get it fixed.

The "CV shaft" is the bit you can see that looks like a shaft
The "CV boot" is the black bit your worried about
The "CV joint" is the bit the bit that the boot is covering and protecting from stuff

I am very confused between CV shaft, CV boot, CV joint and the whole CV thing.

Just to expand a little, a Constant Velocity joint is a flexible joint that allows the wheels to steer & move with the suspension, while being driven by the transmission.

Here's a good guide:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/cvjoint2.htm

A CV boot is the rubber cover that protects the joint, keeping greasy stuff in & gritty stuff out.

I know what you mean by a CV shaft, but I've never heard them called that before. They're more commonly known as drive shafts or half-shafts.

plugga42 you really know your stuff.

All Kudos to Ol' Fart  & Magna Buff  - they taught me most of what I know about Magnas.
(Like how to NOT do what you see in my avatar.)

The rest I have picked up during a long & mis-spent youth.
