hey guys

through these forums iv read a bit about efi and carby. im not a very mechanical person but im learning everyday and have learnt heeps since iv been a member. im gathering that efi is fuel injection.
could some one please explain to me the difference between carby and efi and how to tell if my car has it?

i did a search but didnt come up with much

lol, yeah carby or carburetor is a simple device used on older engines or engines that needed either no throttle or full throttle and less in between. It uses a vacuum to suck the fuel/air ratio in.

EFI = Electronic fuel injection. Injectors squirt the desired amount of fuel into the cylinder before the spark flug ignites it.

please explain to me the difference between carby and efi

A carburrettor mixes air & fuel, which is sucked into the cylinder by the downstroke of the piston, before being compressed & ignited by the sparkplug.

In a fuel injection system (of the type installed in the 1st gen Magna) the intake stroke of the piston only sucks air. During the intake stroke, a measured amount of fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The air/fuel mix is then compressed & ignited by the sparkplug.


please explain to me ... how to tell if my car has it?

Assuming you have a 1st gen Magna, take a look at the 2.6 badge just behind the front wheel arch. If it says ECI MULTI, it's a good bet your's is fuel injected.

Open the bonnet, & see if you have a silver brick looking thing about 200mm long behind the rocker cover, that says EFI MULTI. Yes? EFI. No? Carbie.

a lot of people are doing efi conversion as the magna carby was not of the best design. i have done this conversion and love the benefits of it. (my carby was blocked really bad)( i also did it on a tr).
