Hey fellas,
I havent had any problems with my car at all until recently!
This is only the second problem though so im pretty happy.
Now, I am leaking gearbox oil. I'm pretty sure its gearbox oil. It has been spraying all over the bottom of the car, been like this for about 5 days now. I leave oil patches where i park for an hour!
Not sure how much i am leaking but the gear changes have been slightly harder.
Want to get this fixed tonight.
My question is, where the hell can i get a new seal??? Repco dont sell them. BSC dont have any in stock ANYWHERE.
And second question is, would it be the seal or have i scorched the shaft?
Right hand side btw.
cheers.

Mitsubishi, about $15.
If you remember I changed mine whilst you were at my place one day, only took 15 minutes.
Also, you are after the BLACK seal, NOT the brown one, places like Repco/Supercheap etc will sell you a brown one which is too small, the only place I found the black one was Mitsu, and I have a part number at home, but not here :(

I cannot remember dude lol
So i'm guessing you had to pull the drive shaft out of the gearbox then press fit it and put the shaft back in then refill the oil?
15mins?

Jack car up.
Remove tyre.
Undo big 32mm nut on end of shaft/hub.
Undo 2 17mm bolts holding hub to shock.
Crawl under and unbolt shaft from engine block (14mm I think)
Yank shaft from gearbox.
Use big flat screwdriver to prise seal out.
Use small block of wood and hammer (or a mallet would be best) and hammer seal back into gearbox.
Reinsert shaft and re-do bolts into engine block
Redo bolts/reattach hub to shock
Redo 32mm nut and split pin.
Reattach tyre and lower car and remove jack.
Its a 1 man job and 20 minutes tops, albeit ive done it to about 4 cars now so Ive had some practice.
Ive never had to refill gearbox oil, I jack the car up as high as I can on the side Im doing as to minimise oil leakage. At most Ive lost maybe 100ml from doing it, so not anything to stress about.

not happy at all.
The seal i bought was too small! And it wasnt even the brown or grey one that has been mentioned in other threads!
It was black like the one you get from mitsu.
Anyway i put everything back together again and i am taking the car in to a specialist, to see if anything else is wrong with it... argghhhh
Also the seal looked totally fine.

gas_hed: would i be correct in thinking that the steps you said would be the same for chagning cv shafts?

yes, but you would take the shaft off the hub as well and take the whole unit out from under the car. Piece of cake once you know how its done. I can honestly say now that i have done it i could do it all in 20 mins easy.

how does it come off the hub?

Turn the steering full lock and just push it out. The only thing holding it on the hub is that big hub nut that is taken off anyway. I didnt see the reason for taking it off anyway as it wouldnt matter if it was on or off to get the shaft out of the gearbox.

Here comes another rant about the seal!
Ok, if you have read this thread you may already know that the seal i bought was too small so i put the old one back in...
Well i did a gearbox oil change on monday night after going to mitsu and ordering a new seal...
Now the car was fine for the day but as soon as i park it on my driveway last night it decides to annoy me once again.
20 mins after i parked the car a mate of mine rocks up and tells me there is a ****load of oil under my car..
Now all the new oil i put in was leaking like a tap out of the driveshaft seal!!!!!
ARRGH!!!!
So now i am without my car for the day and i have to go to mitsu after work and pick up the new seal IF it has arrived.
So tonight is another night of pulling the drive shaft out and replacing the seal then topping up the oil..
Life is soooo much FUN isnt it???
That car of yours is filling me with confidence atm.......you know what I mean.

Its only a seal dude, they all go over time.
If my motor was blowing smoke and over heated and started bursting hoses and things like that, then you would worry lol
It is a $15 dollar part from Mitsu. Unlike a CV joint. All of mine are fine BTW.

You'd be worrying more than me haha, you still own it! I'm not too worried, I'm only commenting...lol

Ok, here is another rant.
The Car went in on Monday to Wodonga Transmissions.
They supposedly replaced the seal i already replaced coz it was not seated properly.
After they fitted it, they told me that it was still leaking and that the shaft was moving up and down out of the diff.
They told me that the diff was stuffed and he wanted to do a diff overhaul.
I said no.
I then took it to my cousens work (Wodonga Power Steering).
He has had experiance in gear boxes also.
He had it for the day and told me that the seal looked to be damaged. He reckons that someone had damaged it when putting the shaft back in.
SO WTF.
This is ****ting me up the walls.
I do not know what is going on but i am getting frustrated as to why MY CAR HAS NOT BEEN FIXED YET!!!!!

if the shaft is moving around it would damage the seal.
how old are the shafts? and do you have any vibration under load at about 100kmh? while trying to sort out my steering shudder a suspension guy told me that it is possible for the bearings to go and then shaft will move around. so how old are your shafts? if they are getting on a bit it may be that they are starting to wear and this is damaging the seals

I dont think they have been replaced since new. So they are 9 yrs old.
I also have noticed a little bit of vibration. But i just thought there may have been flat spots on the stockies i put on.

is the vibration under load or all the time? if it is only under load then i would say it more than likely is the bearings in the shaft, which could damage the seal.

I will have to find this out.

OK, everybody.
If you can remember the thread i posted with the driveshaft seal problem. Well, lets just say after replacing the seal, then getting a gearbox place to replace the seal again and tell me that i need the bearing rebuilt(i LOL'd), and then replacing the cv shaft(confirmed joint clicking while turning right when car is cold) and replacing the seal again.
The problem still exists.
Now i have had the car sitting on flat ground for over a week. I have narrowed it down to the fact that it only leaks when on a 35 plus degree angle.
Now the oil that the gearbox place put in was running out like water, or realistically engine oil, today at lunchtime when i parked the car on the driveway(35 plus degree angle) and the car was at normal temp. But i wouldnt think that gear oil would run out like engine oil. So im thinking that perhaps they put the wrong oil in? I'm not sure.
Now i can only assume that it never had anything to do with the drive shaft seal. And that the problem is up further on the gear box. This would explain why it only leaks on upward angles. I have not tried parking on a downward angle yet either.
I am really getting to the end of my patience with this car.
Can anyone who has appropriate knowledge give me some suggestions?
Cheers.

well gearbox oil is rather runny. it isn't thick like grease. and as far as types of oils go, there isn't a huge variance in gearbox oils.
now i am going to go off on a bit of a tangent here. have you had your rocker cover gaskets checked? it could be that the gasket has gone somewhere and when you are parked on a slope the engine is just at the right angle for oil to pool up and run out. then it is running down the box and past the seal.
i had a similar problem to this in my r33.

good suggestion, but the oil is not dark. It is fresh, just like the oil in the gearbox, the engine oil is nearly 3 months old, and would not be that clean.
also the oil level in the motor hasnt changed, i checked last night. It is definately gear oil.

ok. have you checked the filler bolt? not the drain bolt but the filler one. also have you checked where the selector goes into the box? as i said in the other thread, i just don't have my manual on this computer to check for any other places it could be.

Filler bolt is fine, took me 10 mins to undo it last night lol.
Keep in mind this leak has been the same for about a month now.
I will check the selector. Just looked at the manual and the selector is up high, in fact you can touch it from the engine bay. The leak looks like it is coming from either the diff or just above.
If its not the seal, it will be something above it that is leaking onto the RHS driveshaft and is getting flicked around.

so it is on the drivers side?
checked your power sterring fluid levels? i know it is a long shot, but i am just throwing out ideas.
