I have a tj 3.5 auto and last night I was driving when sudfdenly the car started to what I would call slip when changing gears. Like it will rev then change. Then the N in the instrument cluster began to flash. From a standing start if you put you foot down slowly the car will rev like in neutral then when it hits around 2000rpm it will move off.
Whats happened to the car?

How quickly is the light flashing?
If it's really quickly, then the ATF has overheated.
If it's about once per second, then the transaxle is in lockout mode, which means that there's an internal fault.
Is there enough fluid in the box?

Mine did this when I busted a hose from my tranny cooler and dumped all my fluid over the road.
Was a fun 25km drive with no tranny fluid to home at 11:45pm.
Fixed hose, added fluid, problem be gone.

yeah the fluid is fully topped up. It flashes about once every second.
So whats that mean, what should I do?
Mitsubishi Operators Manual chapter 6-11:
The "N" lamp flashes slowly (once per second) with the "D" range selected.
The automatic transmission safety device may be operating due to a malfunction of the transmission.
Have your vehicle inspected by an authorised MITSUBISHI dealer as soon as possible.
You can try this to erase faulty code:
1.Turn the ignition switch to off
2.Disconnect the battery cable from the (-) terminal for 10 seconds or more
3.Reconnect the cable
4.After the engine has warmed up, run it at idle for about 15 minutes
Note: Erasing faulty code will not fix the problem
How much fluid you had to pour in? How long you were driving with low fluid level? Were you towing something heavy for prolonged period of time?

Either take it down to mitsubishi or if you have done your own transmission flush before, give that a try..... you better be hoping it fixes the problem and theres no damage to the transmission inside, no leaks anywhere?? 100% sure?
Oil still bright red? not a browny colour?

I'm 19 n did it myself. Just make sure you buy the right tranny fluid for ur car and be prepared for some $ for it.
The tranny fluid sump bolt is in the stupidest location underneath.

I wud suggest to take it to Mitsi dealer and give the fluid a good flush. I had my tranny service from ultratune for $120 where they only change the fluid (not a flush) and after a couple of weeks the fluid is all dirty again, so obviously they only managed to change a portion of fluid. I then had a complete flush from a Mitsi dealer(DVG Wanneroo- they are so cool) for $180 and it looks pretty clean now.
Also the computer has a lot to do with these tranny. I was feeling a little bit of rough shifting (only just- without looking at techo you coulc feel the change at 2-3 while for 1-2, 3-4 you can't really feel the change). Mitsi dealer says tranny fluid has nothin to do with 2-3 rough shifting, need a relay upgrade/installation on my computer. They did it and asked me to drive for few days for the computer to relearn. The major change that I can feel now is the power. After I bought it from a grany (70 yrs), I reset the ecu as suggested by other threads and it was running like a crap (like 90yrs). Now the power is all back. Anyone knows what that relay is??
Best of luck.
