Need some new 235/45/17's... what can everyone recommend as a compromise of grip/price?

I can't really justify spending like $250 per tyre, I currently have Falken ze-326s that came on the rims new and have been pretty impressed with those, nearly worn out and I've done 33000 on them, grip excellent in the dry and good in the wet.

I know 235/45/17's are illegal on a 7" rim but I don't care.

Basically want something as cheap as possible that isn't complete trash that I'll get a decent amount of k's from.

I just put TOYO Proxus 4 in 225/50/17 on my rims. Got them for $195 each. Plus the load rating is 98 which suits my AWD perfectly. Directional tread pattern that looks good, and very quiet. Can't say how long they will last as only had them on the car for 2 weeks.

MAXXIS MA-Z1. I'm probably going to put 245/40/18 of these on my EVO. I have the choice of any tyres I want basically. Was going to go with Michelin Sport MAX ($480 per corner) but might go the MAXXIS cause I have them on the Ralliart and they're great.

Falken 329's are ok for the price, I've got Firestone Wideovals???? there good in the dry and wet, I paid $250 each for 18's, but didnt really look around for better prices. If you can pay that price for 17's try bridgstone potanza's

My favourites bang-for-buck tyres:

Federal 595 and Maxxis MA-Z1 (not MA-V1, they suck)

The main differences are the Maxxis are pricier (say $18 each vs $140, but they are unbelievably good in the wet (I think the Federals are still decent in the wet, just not exceptional like the MA-Z1s).

Also if it could be an issue for you, the MA-Z1s are horrible on the track, disintegrating badly when you get some heat into them. The 595s apprently are very good on the track for a street tyre.

IMO go the 595s (unless wet-weather performance is a priority), you'll be amazed just how good a tyre you can get for a pittance if you know what to get.

Most 235/45r17's only have a 93 load index (but not all) the magna requires a 94 load index. You don't care I hear you say, your insurance won't cover you.

Well aware, if the tyres cause the accident then yeah it's void. If I rear end someone I'll be fine.

Have you ok'd that with the insurance company? Pretty big gamble to take on an assumption.

Kumho make a 235/45R17 in a94 load rating, and you can score them for as little as $140 a corner, very good tyre for the price!

Bump to add conclusion for anyone searching about tyres, got Maxxis ma-v1s for $130 each.

-quieter
-don't tramline like the falkens (didn't realise they were doing it)
-more grip in straight line (can't spin in 1st now)

Not sure about cornering yet since I haven't given them a hard time but pretty happy. High load rating too, 94 or 97 can't remember but they're legal.

If your load rate (LR) is 94 u have more choices, but if 95, then it gets very limited.
LR vs Insurance - Ins Comps require vehicle to be road worthy ie legal before they pay out any claims. It's up to the owner to keep it legal. I wouldn't gamble....
If u insist on staying with 235s, consider Trampio Gu:wn (TPG). In the beginnig similar to Falken 326/329 (ok grip) and has lasted me so far some 30+G km (can't remember now). Obviously over the time they age and become quite slippery (hardened). Spins the wheels now on take off  (check my car specs).
My most likely new (and legal) tyre will be Hankook K104 225/50/17 LR 98 ~220 ea.
I could go to Potenza 050 and pay 350 each. Or Yoko Advan and pay 400 each or Continental Sp 2 and pay 420 each or.... sigh.
