View Full Version : Buying a TL ES Magna?

Hi Guys,
Ive decided to buy a Magna, currentley looking at the 2003/04 TL ES Magna. All the reviews etc say its a great car. And features wise: air, climate control, cruise, abs, airbags etc its certainly got bang for your buck.
Orginally i wanted to go for a camry but im not paying 13 grand for a 2000 camry with 150,000kms! they can shove that **** where it came from
Currentley i have a 1997 VSII Executive Commodore which isnt too bad but now the probems are starting to arise as seems to be usual with commodores at about 150,000kms.
Also moving to Perth for uni so want a decent car for the next 4 years and something that is going to be trouble free.
Price wise i have been looking at 12,500k throught to 14,990 for a Magna with under 100,00kms.
What do you guys think is a fair price for a TL with 70,000kms?
Now here comes the barage of questions
-What to look out for when buying a Magna?
-What are common faults?
-Advantages of a Magna?
-Disadvantages of a Magna?
-What would you pay?
Thanks guys, and any other tips etc will be much appreciated, i dont want to go and buy a car and find out theres big big problems, as ive seen some cheap magnas for the amount of Km's they have.
Thanks. :D

welcome! which uni u going to go to?
imo higher spec models are even better value for money, but may not fit the bill price wise... TLs are good value for money, mainly because lotsa people dont like them :P hehe
maybe try to find one thats already converted to gas, or can be converted to gas... this may help heaps if ur gonna be a student and every $ counts :)
another option, as its just the ES ur looking for, is to consider buying in an auction :) can get some great deals on base models
i think just make sure any recalls have been done, and if its around 100,000k's make sure the timing belt has been done (factor it into the cost if the car is up to around 95,000k's)... otherwise should be all good :)
plus maybe add another $500 to replace the stock deck and get some decent sound ... and another $500 for tint..... and another $500 for lowering... then it will look 10x better :D

Try get them at the auction's that's where they're cheapest, for a car TL with 70'000 i wouldnt go over 13k
I love everything about the car except the turning circle, my biggest grievance with the thing. oh and i wouldn't bother with gas if i were you, the 3.5 petrol is suprisingly excellent on fuel

Probably the same reason most people don't like them, the blown up oversized lancer front end is the problem! TJ Magna's are the best looking IMO.

I do not beleive most people don't like TLs, it may be your lack of appreciation of a vehicle that has style and comfort.

ECU in Joondalup.
Thanks for the advice, its funny i really like the look the front of the TL has, looks beefy?
Didnt really think about the auctions.....
What are the main/best ones in Perth?
As im living in Karratha where everything is horrendously overpriced i have to fly down to Perth for a week or 2 and either bring it up or leave it down there in storage at a mates untill i move.
Thanks for the advice and keep it coming
Mine was $14500 nearly two years ago, and it just ticked over 70000ks... you could find one for $12000ish at the auctions.

Hei Pilot- I work in ECU, Jo too. I recently bought a TJ 03 for 10.5k at Perth. I saw a few of TLs going for around 13K with odo reading less than 50,000kms, but I am not a big fan of TL's look and I didn't go for those. I can remember one going for 13K with just 33,000kms on the odo. Keep an eye on quokka and Sunday times and I am pretty sure you will get a bargain. The only problem that I know in TL is the electric windows.

Whats up with that one? just the mechanisms failing?

You could buy mine for a few thousand more with every thing done to it
2004 TL with only 46500 km and lots of accessories .
If you want a full list of the gear on the car that's no prob

I didn't mean most people on the market, I meant most people who don't like the TL don't like it because of its front end.
Bearing in mind it was the shape of the TL that failed the Magna in the end, I guess that means its not too popular though. Well I suppose I don't have any hard evidence that the styling killed Magna, but it certainly wasn't the features, reliability or warranty, they just didn't sell well enough, and theres only one thing other than features, reliability and warranty that could have failed it.
Its only my opinion though after all. The TL can look quite aggressive, just doesn't look great totally stock IMO.

If thats it in you avatar id love to but dont have the cash, ill be struggling to pay 15 grand.
I 100% dont want a loan so it will be cash, hopefully the dealers (if i use them) will reduce the car atleast a grand for cash!
But seriously thinking about auctions now, any good ones in Perth?
Thanks for the advice and keep it rolling!!

You will pick up 05 magna from the Government auctions with less than 50,000ks for around $14000. Try to get an 2005 model as they have the 5 year 130,000 k factory warranty.
Check out the www.pickles.com.au and www.manheimfowles.com.au they are the major government and fleet auctioneers throughout Australia.
The best time to check their listings is from Friday each week as their auctions are usually on Mondays and Tuesdays the following week. On the weekends you can buy most of the vehicles pre-auction fixed price. If you wait for auction day you will pay about 10% less.
At Pickles you can log on to their site and follow the promps to register as "an observer" and watch any auction live to check out the price various vehicles are selling for. You can also buy on-line if you have previously inspected the vehicle and are happy with its condition.
I bought my 2004 TL VR AWD with 40,000 ks 2 years ago at the Government auction in Sydney for $16,500.
Have never needed to take it back for any warranty repairs and it now has over 75,000 ks on it.
You can check the Pickles site now as they have a couple of Magnas on thier fixed price listing. I think they were in Melbourne.

I just noticed that Pickles Canberra Government auctions on at 3.30pm on thursday afternoon has 5 2005 TW ES Magnas with less than 50,000 ks up for auction.
If you can manage it you should log on to Pickles and register to watch the auction live on-line and see what they sell for. I see they want $15,800 pre-action.
Any way log on and have a look at them.

Thanks man, i have registered and set up a product alert etc, will look @ the Fyshwick auction tomorrow.
The only prob with the WA government is they dont drive too many magnas, there is the odd one that i have seen, mostly drive overpriced camrys, holdens and fords, but there was a magna veranda on one of the auction sites yesterday but the auction was today and gone, so dunno how much it went for.
Also was looking @ todays west australian and found a few good deals:

If i was paying cash should be able to get it for 12,500-13,00?
Keep the info etc comming helping heaps.

I purchased a 2004 TL LS from Adelaide 6 months ago for $12.5K. Had 80,000 on the odo. In my opinion it is a first class vehicle and good value for money.
If you keep watching this forum there always seem to be be guys who know a lot about Magna's and seem to be able to diagnose faults, and tell you what the common problems are.
First off, everyone seems to think that you should do the lube jobs more frequently than the handbook says - every 5K or 7.5K rather than the 15K that the manufacturer recommends. Use good quality oils etc. and it should last a long time.

Rich on price! With $13K, you should find one of 04 model with less than 50K on the odo in WA unless you rush too much :).
I was also considering the option of going for auctionb, but I wud never spend something around 10K sitting at the computer without driving and feeling it.

I was considering buying one without knowing how it went and actually being in it. But im just going to bite the bullet and fly down to Perth and spend 4-5 days car hunting!!
At the moment the better dealers seem to be John Hughes, Paceway and Any AHG dealer-with the warranty, free defensive driving course and road side assist.
Been looking at the auctions but no magnas as yet.
Hopefully i will get a good deal as im paying cash and i will try and talk them down lol

i bought my KJ from the guys at Wanneroo Mitsu, which is part of the DVG network... had great service from them (i'm only 22), and they sell new and used... also got a cool lil voucher book/card that i've used alot since then :) saved me hundreds (probly more than the value of the defensive course)
depends where u find the cars, just saying thats one to keep an eye out on :)
*note* if u do buy a car there, lemme know before you put the cash down and i think i can score money out of the deal too! :)
go wherever the price is cheapest and service is best tho in all honesty mmk

I paid 12k for mine, about 2 months ago, with 79,000 on the clock.
The car is faultless, apart from the usual wear and tear. It'll probably be a fleet car, so expect a nick in the door skin or a tear in the seat.
There's a bit of torque steer past about 5000rpm, bit it's nothing you can't handle. They seem to handle quite well, the chassis absorbs most bumps and ruts in the road, and the standard rear sway bar makes cornering fairly flat.
The only thing I could possibly warn you to look out for is the transaxle. I've been lucky; others haven't been so fortunate. As they're not fitted with a filter, they tend to dirty the fluid quickly.

Right on money!! I get all my servicing from Wanneroo Mitsu and they are very cool guy. Good manners and very helpful. Recently got tranny flush for just $180 (>$200 at most other places). Highly recommend them! Close to ECU, Jo as well. :bowrofl:

Havent really seen many TJ VRX or Verandas around, mostly the executives and the only TJ VRX i have seen that was under 15k had 166,000kms on it
Seen some verandas but all overseas owned car makers seem to have a really tacky woodgrain, have sat in a 2004 Veranda and it was like bright orange!
Its defintley not a decision im rushing into, looking at all aspects and there seem to be a few reasonbly priced private cars as well with extended warrantys eg.below.

hehe its 'Verada', not Veranda... :bowrofl:
as for the woodgrain, personal choice i dont mind, the EI's dont get as much as the Xi's/GTVi's...
Click here (http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/comparespecs.php?key2=MITS03HO&key=MITS03DV) for a comparison between my '03 KJ SII against a '03 TL ES.
Some differences i can see:
TL has only a 4spd box, KJ is 5spd
Alloys on KJ, TL has none
TL has side airbags, KJ has none
KJ has 4disc cd changer, TL has 1cd
KJ has traction control (optional on TL)
TL has EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution)
KJ has fog lamps
some of those are minor... imo the interior of the verada is alot nicer than that of the TL, and may make you rethink it.
also if the ES only has a 4spd box, consider looking for a VR or something :)
*Edit* or best of both worlds:
2003 KL Verada Ei (http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/private/MITSUBISHI/VERADA/details.aspx?__sid=114612BAE56E&Cr=0&__Ns=pCar_PrivateSpecialFlag_Int32|1||pCar_ImageCo unt_Int32|1||pCar_LastModifiedDate_DateTime|1&State=Western%20Australia&distance=25&silo=1003&seot=0&__Nne=20&Model=VERADA&R=1444560&__N=4294964597+83+4294964081+834+285+257&Make=MITSUBISHI&state_id=83&trecs=7), 85,000k's, $14500 (and the woodgrain aint red, just bad flash photography)

Yeah I have to say I wasn't too fond of the woodgrain when I was looking around at Magna/Verada's, but it has grown on me over the last few days. I am actually starting to like it, better than slabs of grey and black.
I wasn't about to turn down an excellent condition 2000 Verada for $7500 for something like that anyway :P

God, i cant belive how thick i am!! Veranda lol didnt even realise it!!
Had a look on the various car sites for 2003 VERADAS :D KJ
Realsie why now i couldnt find too many "Verandas" for sale on Carpoint :P
The Verada doesnt look too bad, when i go down to Perth will have to sit in All the magnas, veradas, wrx's etc to see how it feels and see in person what they look like.
Were there many problems with the TJ/KJ Series cars?

nothing major i dont think, just rear windscreen seals werent always up to scratch...
but i reckon majority of owners on here would own TJ/KJ cars if there was a poll, probably 2nd would be TH... so as far as owner satisfaction, TJ's are right up there :)
yeah sit in them and see wat you like... the finish of the verada won me over (and found a black KJ, which i just couldnt pass up!)

Hopefully sitting in it will make my mind up lol
I drove one at the car sales up here which is 17,000 for a 2003
magna with 100,000kms on it and it is a bit gutless compared to the VS when you floor it, it just doesnt have that power straight away.
Are all Magnas/Veradas like that? or was it that car? Doesnt worry me just interested to see
But i like how they feel tight inside so to speak lol they dont feel as fat as the Commodore and Falcon do which is great! :D

A TL should be alot more powerful than a VS mate, i'd say the car wasn't running very well, and it sounds quite expensive for such high kms.

yeah the 3.5L should definitely be noticable when punched! use tiptronic next time, it may not have dropped down enough (the auto boxes actually 'learn' ur driving style, and it couldve hardly dropped down a gear, making it feel kinda gutless)... that and yeah the car couldve not been too great mechanically
try to avoid cars the 100,000k's unless its a TJ/KJ, coz theres lotsa low k's magnas out there, and as i said before you may have to take into account the timing belt has to be done...
but good atleast to get to know the car before you buy it.
ps considered hiring a TL ES for a few days/week? may give u the best test drive if ur not too sure about the car. i know Europcar has them, dunno who else

Yeah im not buying that car, it was the only magna they have up this way so they price it accordingly like everything else
It was a bit rough so i would say that its ****ed and needs alot of work done to it. And compared to what i have seen and some of the links that you guys posted show that this car is WAY overpriced for what it is.
Cant rent a car cause im not 21, which is ****, they let you test drive cars when ur 18 but dont let u rent cars till ur 21! Also Thrifty have the Magna Wagons

Pity you aren't in Tassie!!! we'd be able to solve both our problems.
I want to sell my 2000 CSI auto Camry for around $12k so I can get a 2002 TJ VR-X or Ralliart, oh well :(
In Tassie we can get TL's for around 14k to 15k, 2005 models with LOW km's too.
So don't pay anything more than 14k I reckon

Here is the Redbook value
http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/prices.php?key=MITS03DG
Despite the apparent good deal, check the car out for title, mech. condition (no major prangs), logbooks etc. etc.
It seems to me that red cars often are lower priced as they are not as popular as equivalent ones with more muted colours. Also try the seller for a better deal as you hold the upper hand as it is a buyers market. This is especially so if you have ready cash or a bank cheque to hand over immediately.
Best of luck with your inspection.:D

Hey guys,
At the moment im flying to Perth on the 27th anyway, and cant really afford 1200 bucks to go down to Perth to check out the car. Was going to bite the bullet but to expensive for my liking  friggin fly in fly out and big company and Qantas, cheaper to fly to Singapore and Sydney from Perth than it is to fly to Karratha!!!!
Rant over lol, will wait till im down there as im flying o/s for a couple of weeks then have 4 days including a wed which i will use the wed to go car hunting :D :D
But then again i have to try and sell my VS Commodore ASAP so i can have the cash.

My 93' Magna Exec's engine just died, so I'm looking for a new baby. I found this BEAUTY http://www.autotrader.com.au/iteminfo/adnumber_6610771_kw_ls_loc_locRZSQregtAVSCdistRZSQ AVSCstateRZSQ4AVSCregRZSQBrisbane+and+South+East_m axp_13000_off_0_sect_Automotive_sort_otRZSQ1BJDZfd RZSQSearchDisplayPriorityIndAVSCotRZSQ1BJDZfdRZSQF irstPublished_sqt_0_srchby_minyrRZSQ2004AVSCmmbsRZ SQMakeAVSCsrchbyRZSQmkmdlAVSCmkdlsRZSQMitsubishiMR FXMagna_stpg_1_subs_Used+Cars_ which is EXACTLY what I'm after but it had been sold :( It was even just up the road! (Another creepy fact: that's actually the house I used to LIVE in! we just moved out at the start of the year lol).
Anyone know any places to check out Magna's in Brissie? I would so take a LS over the ES after seeing these beasts.

Hey all, just an update to this thread, have posted the same in WA forum but most of you prob dont read it.
Bought a Tanami 2004 TL ES Magna with 84k on the clock for 13,999 @ John Hughes in Perth-MASSIVE dealer for those who dont know and very good to deal with.
Will Post some pics on the post your ride thread, hopefully on monday when my car arrives on truck from Perth, took the 2 hour flight over the 16 hour drive
Got the darkest legal tint in WA and will eventually chuck on some mags and maybe a decent stero system see how money goes.
Thanks for your advice etc, happy now that i have my Magna.
