The time has come to change the oil. i'm not to keen on giving it to an aprentice machanic at mitsu so i wanna do it myself.

Any suggestions on wat oil? (TJ SII with 110km)

Like magnatec 10w-40 or Snth S 10w-40?
Wat do you boys use?

Any quality 10W-40 oil will do. Mobil 1 is very good and reasonably priced. Magnatec is a bit cheaper, then you go to like Motul/Redline/Royal Purple. I personally used Motul in my Ralliart and again in my EVO. Bang for buck would probably suggest Penrite HPR or Mobil 1.

I recently had mine serviced and they put in 20-50w oil in it (Shell). It is really thick from just touching it. Does this sort of oil damage our engines? I have a 3.5 V6 97 verada.

Cheers

You are highly recommended to try any semi-synthetic oil which just cost probably $10.00 more than regular. Any brand from Shell Helix Plus, Castrol Magnetic, or any other semi synthetic oil. normally 5-40w within that range. They also state is for later car models in the 90s.

I also suggest you put some engine flush to have a good flush of the old oil.
Change the oil filter as well which cost no more than $15.00
Add accordingly to what the car needs. Example a 2.4L Magna only needs 4.3L of engine oil.
Otherwsie top up and check your dip stick regularly.

If the oil sump nut has worn out get a new one from the dealers as it will not cost more than $2.00 with a rubber washer.

Cheers!

With older engines that have more wear and tear, thicker oil can offer more protection. Otherwise, it'll just give you less power, wouldnt worry too much about it.

I'd say 20W-50 would be a little too thick. I'm no expert or anything, but just make sure you warm the car up sufficiently before driving it. I personally use 10W40. If you live in a colder climate maybe go with a 5W40.

Penrite HPR10 would be a good reasonably priced oil for your car.

Nulon is another good brand of oil that hasn't got a huge following yet.

Both did well in a test that I saw recently. They were far better than other oils in that price range.

I used to run the cheaper 15-40 nulon in my XR6Turbo.

I use Shell Helis Plus Eco 10W-30 semi-synthetic. Its about $35 - though I usually buy when Supercheap / Autobarn have their 20% off sales...

i use Mobil 1 5w-50, no issues with it. Have tried Mobil S 10w-40 and Shell Helix 5w-40. No real difference in fuel consumption or anything thats abnormal eg. engine noise wise. Just thought i might use a premium oil just some reputation behind it for some peace of mind.

you can get an additive from repco, super cheap, auto barn, etc. its called engine flush there are many brands of them out there, you just add it to your oil prior to an oil change, its suppose to get rid of sludge build up in the engine. but if you change your oil regularly and use good oil, you wouldn't have that issue, i change my oil every 5000km with Mobil 1, may be a bit of of over kill which a very good oil but i had no engine related issues so far.

Is mobil syth S (semi) 10w-40 any good? its that or castrol magnatec.
there is some fully senthetic oil but i'm not sure if there is a piont?
i want to stick to 10w-40 and thats all that available
wat would u boys go with?

out of those two i'd go synth s, at least it's semi synth, which magnatec isn't.

mobil synth S would be my choice out of the 2. but i'm one of those that is willing to pay a premium so i use mobil 1. its only about 20 bucks more per bottle and if you change it every 6 months/10000km, its barely equates to much. at least you know that you have given your engine one of the best or at least something thats high up there...

the most expensive doesn't mean the best!!!
look a 5w-50 is too thin for a car with 110km
fair enough if your car has 50km but i have heard of stories of makes of mine actually did damage to the motor because of the too thin oil.

Agreed! I've got 180000+km on the clock and I'm running Mobil 1 5w-50. No problems, no smoke from exhaust, no abnormal engine noises

well i dunno everyone has there own opinion but i reckon using cheaper oil and changing it every 5-7.5km is better.
Thats wat i do, because guys its not really to oil that needs changing but the actual filter

the oil looses it's lubricanticity (is that even a word) after a while so it needs to be changed as well as the filter
ideally if the oil is doing it's job then the filter won't really need changing with EVERY oil change
just good practice to do so

for the record i use royal purple
bloody exxy but if you want the best you gotta pay for it
