Hi to all members,
I live in a small rural community (Bombala) and have purchase a 3.6 TS Magna.
Great car has 287000 klm. I used to do most mechanical work on my cars so I know my way around them.
I am looking at possibly reringing the engine and would appreciate some advice and suggestion on where I might be able to get it done. Local Mitsubishi dealer quoted $3084 this included 22.2 hrs labour.
Reason for possible rering being, used approx 1/4 to 1/2 litre oil travelling to Melbourne same travelling back to Bombala. Yet two trips of 100 each and one trip of 200 no oil used?
regards
Bill

do you have the factory repair manual

there is a downloadable version online somewhere

usuall problems electrical valve stem seal harden {this may be you oil usage problem }

oil leakes at the rockers . worn tappets (hydraulic )

easy to service but the inlet manifold has to be taken off to fit the rear bank of plugs

100,000 timing belt
timing the cams can be tricky with the timing belt and do the water pump at the same time

some more info here
http://www.mitsubishiclubaustralia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1679

not to hard to recon the engine if only rering and bearings dont forget the oil pump

Hi and welcome.

What buffy said and also next time you give it an oil change try putting an oil flush through it.
It might clear out some of the problem.

The manual is here.

Small hiccup with engine size, apologies it is 3.0 litre.
I have a full workshop manual in pdf format available to one and all it is 45 mb so will burn to cd.
Thank you for all the ideas, will have a busy weekend checking what I can.
Will posy some photo's soon, be warned not pretty at the moment the clear coat is beginning to peel off the boot and their is a strange white streak on the roof that I cannot remove at the moment.
Oil usage is main problem at this stage.

You would have to be keen to spend $3k on a TS engine - you could buy a very nice low km 2nd gen car for that. What's the rest of the car like? Seriously, if it has 270k on the clock just drive it until it dies, you can buy a lot of oil for$3k, or put the 3k towards a 3rd gen, they are giving them away in the Capital Cities. If you have some land get your self another good whole car for parts, for around $1000 - 1500 and just swap engines. Its not that hard. Good luck.

Yep..
i spent $1500 rebiulding most of the engine and it still leaks
i'll tell you right now, not worth it in the long run!
you can buy a 2nd hand TS engine for $600
you'd be STUPID for not getting a 2nd hand one and dropping that in

The body and mechanics are in good condition. The paintwork is a bit shoddy. All round it is still a good car.
Trouble is I live 200 klm from Canberra, 544 from Sydney and Melbourne. Population of the entire area is 1500 on a good day). If I buy a cheap car from Canberra have to add cost of interstate transfer of rego etc. Getting a second hand motor must include transport costs etc. so I am slowly exploring all the options.
Have received some good ideas from this forum though.

If everything else is ok - doesn't use excessive fuel, doesn't blow smoke, starts and idles ok, I would just wear the extra oil use. You will probably get at least another 50k out of it if you give it regular oil changes. Use that time to line up a good parts car in Canberra. Get a permit to drive it home and then you will have parts on tap - engine/box/windscreen/radiator/lights/tyres/lenses/panels/etc etc etc to keep yourself on the road cheap - very handy in a small town. Ebay is a great source of cheap magnas. If you are patient you should get a good runner for under a grand. (Maybe something with a reco engine but some panel damage)

It would appear that I have a leak somewhere. Or for some reason it only uses oil on really long trips. Have done over 100klm since trip to Melbourne and no oil used????????
Have sourced compression tester and will test this weekend to see condition of rings.
This is the first Mistsubishi I have owned and am impressed by it.
Thank you to all members who took time to give me advice.
