Hey People!!!
Just wanted to share and get your thoughts on an issue I am having with my V6 TR Manual.
On the way back from Orange it overheated.
I had it looked at by a Radiator Specialist and he replace the
Top Tank.
Both Upper and lower Hose and clamps.
Thermostat.
A week Later I noted that I am still losing water. About 200ml per 100Km.
I Then got my Mechanic to look into the problem as I thought it may of been water pump.. (Evidence of Water leaking form front of engine)
Mechanic Informs me that it is not water pump but Inlet Manifold gasket. He Replaced.
Got Car back last night to find no more evident of leaking in the engine bay.
Drove to work this morning after checking levels.
arriving at work to find No evidence of coolant in the engine bay.. (I was cheering)
Waited for car to cool down before checkinf fluid levels.
2 ltrs of water needed to be (Topped UP) :-(
Can anyone give me some further insight to this issue.

have you checked your oil it you could have a cracked head and its leaking into the oil or one of the clyniders
or a crack block where one of the bots goes in.
thats all i can think of

Your heater pipe can sometimes leak inside the firewall and down in to the foot wells maybe ? and also check your oil for any signs of water ?

NO signs of Water in the Oil.
No Bubbles / Foam in Radiator.
Oil Filler Cap looks normal also.

where abouts in the front of the engine, near the manifold, etc..
btw, when were you in orange (thats where i live)

Two Weekends ago approaching..
Mum lives in Molong....
I head out there and spend the weekend now and again...
Good respite.
Water seems to be falling over the Tranny strangley enough.

ok let me know men your comming out this way , ill meet you some where,
where your top raditor hose goes ito, the seal might need replacing
or
the bottom or top where the raditor hose goes into the block, there is an O ring as a seal, but i can't seem to think which one it is :rant:

I had the Thermostat gasket replaced with the thermostat
The thermostat housing was sand blasted so it is clean and "New"
All other Seals seem ok (As per Mechanics Work yesterday)
Could it b that water getting into one of the Cyls? My focus is upon the Back cyl head.
Is there any way I can check the rear head for Damage without pulling the Motor apart?
Sure next time Im up that way ill get in touch.

pull one of the plugs out from the back row and see what colour it is and do the same and compare the two.
degrese the snot out of the engine and the wash it off(make sure to cover the electrical componets up), then go for a bit of a drive , then go and have a look so see where it would be comming from

Can I suggest to take it to a Radiator place and get a cooling system check done. I had a similar problem on a Widebody Camry which I thought was a head gasket and it ended up being hose clamps. I went through a reserver bottle every couple of tanks of petrol.
The cooling system check was free.

I had that checked when the Radiator guy rebuilt the Top tank.

if water is getting into your cylinders you'll notice white smoke coming from your exhaust.
So just let the car idle for a few minutes, once its warmed up just check your exhaust, if theres white smoke coming out, you got water being burnt!
So theres water on top of the tranny? Could be a split hose? and where the water bar goes into the water pump there is a O ring...and if thats leaking it could be filling up the "V" valley with coolant and as you drive its spilling it out left and right?

That was one of the initial thoughts too... Mechanic reports O Ring and Pipe to Water Pump.
All seems ok there.

Are you sure it is still going down?
Air in the system after work can cause it to need topping up for a while afterwards.

Would it require more than 2 ltrs?
Would it still leave coolant on the transmission after it has been cleaned.. (fresh Coolant)

It's your pump. If you can smell hot coolant around the car, and you're loosing about 2L a week, it's the pump. I went through the same chain of events as you - rebuilt radiator, replaced hoses, replaced radiator, replaced the overhead pipe and O-ring, and then the pump.

Is there any way I can prove that this is the issue prior to Getting the front end of the Motor apart?
The loss of water today has been about 6 ltrs over 90Km!!
Also It is falling over the Rear (Flywheel) over the motor, Ont the Transmission and then down the Trans where it drips off the Bottom.
This does not apear to be coming out of the front of the engine.
Sorry if I am being a bit silly but I would like to put an end to this as it has been nagging for a week or two now.

The thing is, the water pump is pretty much smack bang in the middle of the front end of the motor.
If there's coolant scattered around various parts of your engine bay, then it's likely that the pump bypass has popped, venting the coolant straight out. With the pressure it's under, it'll end up everywhere.
The only way I found out for certain that it was the pump was to have it looked at while the car was in for a timing belt change.

Noted. I had the Timing belt changed about 35,000 k ago... The pump was fine then..
I just wear that I have to pull the whole front of the motor apart again to check the thing. I have no other reason to remove the front of the motor but for this.. Excuse me if I am stubborn. I just want to be certain.

Yep ive done it many times now....
Have you had the car on stands, had the car running and put a light to where the pump is? (with all timing covers off? (10mm bolts)) Becuase you'll see it dripping.

Hi, what Perry said. look at where the top radiator hose goes into the block, it is just a push in fitting and is held in with 1 x 12mm bolt. when you overheat your motor, the o-ring there can cook and then leak. Replace it on suspicion as the leak may not be evident except under working pressure. Keep in mind all of the advice you are getting on here as it is all good.

Got it back to Mech that stuffed me around abit.. Gave him the opportunity to redeem himself.....
Gave me a good price for the install.

i prolly shoulda told you it was the pump....(not trying to be a smart **** mate)
just a general bit of advice for anyone who goes to a mechanic...
they sortof know what they are talking about but they don't help you fix the problem once off! they want you to come back, so they do just enough to get repeat business out of you...
i am not a mechanic but i have had 5 years of auto electric experience and mechanical experience.
i have done work on numerous peoples cars and when i do work on someone's car i fix it the first time so it doesn't come back again, then word of mouth gets additional business.
if you are in NSW in the sydney area i happy to help anyone with anything anytime.
