View Full Version : normal max rpm
What kind of max rpm are people normally getting in their 3.5L before cut-out?
I've done about 10,000km since new pistons were fitted, and have just recently been able to run out to 7000 rpm on the car's tacho, which is a bit puzzling as I thought the rev limit was set lower than this?

7000 is usually wat it is, or something near this. mine does the same thing but i have neva hit the rev limiter and iv done 90 in first.

i think the std limiter is 6750rpm when i had a working engine it'd usually cut at 6750rpm but on the odd occasion it went to 7000rpm before shifting this is all as indicated on my tacho
which i found out on the dyno reads approx 250rpm under..
it though is not possible to change the factory cut out without full replacment ecu

why cant manuals have the same ratios as the autos!!!! I would love to see a manual hit 90 in 1st.

Sucker! Always having to change gears all the time and having small ratios!

it's still quite a few rpm for what is basically a V6 family hack.
Running an AWD close to the limiter in first on the tippy should be a farily rapid event. Taking into account the reduction ratios in 1st through the centre diff and transfer to the final drive, the AWD is approximately one turn lower in gearing than the FWD. It needs it too!

yeah you get just over 60 in 1st and just over 100 in 2nd
my ef auto falcon would do almost 110 in 1st when pushed lol
I wonder how many rpm the 6G- engined GTOs/3000GT/US VR4/Stealth are getting. There seem to be a number of them managing better than 700hp and 11 seconds.

Who needs to go faster than 60 or so in 1st anyway? Ok damn, one gear change minimum before you get to the maximum legal speed limit.......if you take it to 60 in first then to near 100 in second, you've already beaten granny in the left lane up the on ramp to the freeway anyway, not really gonna be an issue unless you want to race it, in which case, why are you driving a Magna?

dunno where my rev limiter is set off my computer as my tacho doesnt work but redline is like 1000rpm higher than sohc at 7000rpm...
Anyway point of the story i now get to over 110 in 2nd and 175 in 3rd. As oppose to 100 and 158. Also barely starts losing power just before redline, love the top end.

my cars supposed to be a small family hatch with a v6 engine.. ive touched on redline a couple of times, and my redline BEGINS at 7000 RPM
and its a much smaller engine than the magnas 3.5L too

thats why it revs harder less mass sorter distances for the piston to travel!
just like a lil cbr rr 4 cyl that can rev to 21,000rpm
looking at the turbo guys power curve power is maxed around 5400rpm so 6600rpm stock limit is fine..
my engine spent lots and lots of time at 6k+ and she was fine

Thats odd..... I could have sworn you ****ed you engine.

They'd probably rev out to 8500-9000rpm, if there was sufficient fuelling.
andrewd is right though, rpm limit is pretty much decided by rotating and reciprocating mass. Bikes will do 20,000 plus, F1s are about 19,000, and I've seen the odd drag V8 turned to 8000rpm.
On a stock crank, stock pistons and rods, with stock bearings, and the reasonably short stroke that the 6G74 possesses, 7000rpm isn't that much of an ask. Bear in mind that these engines are balanced to a budget. If you were to tear one down, I wouldn't be surprised to find one or two, or possibly more pistons and rods with varying weights.
Back on topic though - my engine (2004 TL) rev limits at 7000.

nope i didnt... washers did
and the drag V8's pulling 8k thats nothing a big capacity highly modded 8 can pull nearly 10k depending on cams etc...

Exactly. When you spend the better part of $50,000 on a race engine, I'd damn well expect it to rev it's nut off.

thats what tbb wants to spend to make this awd one of a kind....
hahaha 50k and rebuild it every time its done 4km lol

My single cam'r V6 goes to 6700.... Whooooo Hoooooo
(really flattens at 6 though, so really pointless:doubt: )

many of the GTO's/3000GT's/Stealths use the DOHC engine which will rev out much more the a SOHC engine.

hope it's not 50K, i'm not after 1000hp

I was idling then the engine cut out.. I had been racing around a bit before revving the guts out of it.

Should be 6900 to my knowledge.

My 3.0 used to hit 7,000rpm with ease, but the 3.5 hit the limiter at about 6700-6800rpm on the dyno and felt a little more breathless up top compared to the 3.0, cams I'm guessing.
