View Full Version : JBL Tube Subwoofer
Just wondering if anyones used one before? I want something to add a bit more kick to my music, but I'm not a fan of the traditional subbie design, where the driver tends to be exposed and doesn't really fit in the boot nicely in a box. One of these could hook up almost like a LPG tank behind the back seats, so it wouldn't prohibit boot storage too much.

I know JBL subbies are loud (As Lucifer kindly informed me lol) but for their price (these are $148) how good a quality are they?
I'm not expecting MTX quality, just something that works alright at decent volumes and doesn't sound like crap.
Cheers guys.

I rate that JBL over the MTX anyways. You have to remember that the cylinder will end up taking up more room. You can get the same sub in a small 1cuft box from strathy for the same money. It even has 2 bars across the front for protection. If you want it to fit nicely, build a custom box. A 1cuft box is the same amount of room as a biggish school backpack, I'm sure you can manage.
The above cylinder will also end up making the sub sound crap as far as bass loading if you mount it like a LPG.

lol, so your not expecting it to be crap. thats a good start :)
Really, I always thought MTX subbies were very good....that said, I've very rarely used one haha.
What would you recommend over the JBL tube then? I don't understand how you would mount it if not like a LPG tank.

my suggestion, goto a decent car audio shop, buy something which needs a small sealed box, rockford fosgate punch comes to mind...

Mounting it like a gas tank would send the sound waves kinda out sideways, might not sound the best.
However if your not going to be pumping it hard I think it could fill in that missing bass, just don't expect extreme performance
What about a slim line Sony subbie like the one attached in the photo? Alright for $250 odd or should I be looking more at pioneer? (Pioneers my preferred brand for audio anyway)

Better off with the JBL. As I said Strathfield have them in a 1cuft sealed box for $149. Its a run out thing.
The pioneer subs really need a 1.5cuft sealed to sound ok, although they recommend anywhere between 26odd litres to 56litres sealed. Smaller the box, the higher the -3db point and the Q. Another option would be the Boston G2 / Hertz ES :D

Thats all another language to me, whats a 1cuft?
I always thought ported was better, but I got that from home audio, different in the car?
I'm looking for a budget add on probably $200 max for the subbie boxed, and I guess it'd be hooked up to something like a 2 channel Jaycar Response Amp, seem to be best bang for buck?
Oh and its probably not for the current car, its planning for the next one :D
Haha, I'd take MTX anyday and i'm a manager of strathfield :D

I'm not expecting MTX quality, .
lmfao...
For $149, you have to expect what you're paying for, quality doesn't come cheap, but im sure it does the job for most :)

Hey I'd love to spend a thousand bucks on a sub, but I just can't afford it. $250 would be pushing it, I'd rather stick around $200, considering I've gotta grab an amp for it too. JBL one attracted me because of the way it would fit in the boot, but thats not all thats important.
What would you recommend Righty, for $200 odd?
In fact, if anyone can tell me what the best value boxed subbie is for $200 odd, that'd be great.
find someone who has a sledge hammer 450, there discontinued so you'll get it cheap

What like Strathfield? Latest catalog says they're $249.....and last time I dropped by my local Strathfield they had heaps of em. Shouldn't you know where to get them if you run a Strathfield Phil?

So one of those then, maybe a bit cheaper even if they are discontinued, and a Jaycar Response 2x80w Amp? Thats $400 odd. Would that amp drive it? I don't really have the $$$ for a monoblock. Does have to run to max potential anyway, not hooking it up to the worlds greatest speakers, just a pair of 4" and a pair of 6" don't really have bass as such.
Cheers
haha, yeah, I don't do catalogue specials... i do my own :D

How'd that work, franchise isn't it?
In your opinion, whats the best sort of price I could get for a sledgehammer from strathy's? Is $200 possible?
200 seems about right
Sounds alright, I'll go check that out one day.
Thanks man.
Jarcar response amp will run one?

Seconded, although I'm not a manager of strathfield :P
JBL subs hammer hard if you've got the right amp behind them :) I run a 600W Coustic amp behind my JBL GT3-15. Goes hard, causes my back to stiffen up terribly after a good half hour of driving with it pumping... And I'm 18! :bowrofl:

Well your just too old then! Bodies getting past subbies already aye?
Whats a Coustic amp cost? I'm presuming close to a 4 digit figure?

Coustic are similar in spec to Response however sound much better with higher S/N, channel separation and damping. They always offer well thought xovers and features. For the budget minded they are quite good :D I would save up and get some of the above.
