Hi guys, was wondering if anyone would give me a clue on what engine oil i should be using. I know some of u would be swearing on why didn't i use the search button. I did and non answered my question. I have a TL and has 69000k on the clock, was wondering what engine oil i should be using. Everyone on the forum is suggesting i should be using the HPR10 which has a 10W-50 weight. Is the 50 weight too thick for the TL?? Heard from 2 mates servicing their car at mitsu using shell heilux one told me that its the 15W-50 plus and the other didnt know but was sure it was a shell. But almost everyone else in the world is telling them i am crazy to be thinking of putting a 50 weight oil in the slightly low mileage magna... The car was running almost like new when i got it 3000ks ago... since then i have changed 2 engine oils on it but yet it hasnt been the same as when i gotten it... the smooth and quiet engine. had magnatec on it that made it sound rough, then drained it out and poured in 15W-40 Valvoline Armour but still it doesnt feel like the day i bought it. Went down to autobarn and was stucked between the penrite 10w-50 , the mutol 4100 turbolight 10w-40 and the Shell heilux (Silver bottle-"Ferrari" engine oil) 5W-40 ... but decided to come home empty handed to see what u guys think... All advice would be appreciated... thanks in advance..

would be better to use a fully synthetic oil on a TL rather than a semi synthetic. 10-40 is probly the way you would want to go. look into penrites 'SIN' range. SIN5, SIN 10 and SIN 15, friggin awesome stuff

Does it mean that the 10W-50 is out?? what about 5W-40? the shell fully syn stuff... is 5W too small??

I use SiN 5 in my TL, and it hasn't missed a beat. 5W is perfect for these motors.

use a decent synthetic oil of 10-30/40 weight and you'll have a happy engine for a very long time

I'd use a 10W-40 or 5W-40. Make sure it's fully synth. HPR10 will be fine if it's 10W-40.

HPR10 is 10W50, but HPR5 is 5W-40. but with HPR5 at $44 should i top up just another $6 for fully synth Shell heilux ultra?? 5W-40??
So does this mean that 50 is the wrong weight?? then why is everyone recommending HPR10 which is 10W-50 in the forum??

Oil is a very subjective topic - everyone has their favourite, everyone uses different weights. Personally I wouldn't use a 10W-50 as I think it's a bit too thick. 5W-40 will be fine - the Shell and Penrite will be pretty much the same, I think they're both aussie too so take ya pick. Personally I use 10W-40 Motul Chrono 300V in my Ralliart and find the engine very smooth.

Mobil 1 is a good oil too - American I think. Again, Mobil 1 5W-40 or 10W-40 would be good.

Different Engines likes different oils and based on members' reviews Magna 3.5 runs just fine on Penrite and Motul. I use Motul 4100 and pretty happy with that. Pick one of these two and keep using for long. As I heard, changing too many brands does not help your engine as engines gets confused which brand to love or hate!lol

Easy! If there is any lifter noise/tappet when hot, go for 10W-50, if any noise when cold go for 5W-40. If no noise whatsoever then 5W-40 sud be alright.
If the previous owner had the servicing from Mitsi dealer, its more likely that the car had been running on 10W-30 oils, so for peace of mind I wud possibly go for Motul 10W-40.
btw- howz ur tranny going?

Hi thanks for asking, the tranny is working perfectly now... mine does a tick tick tick when the engine is hot... sounds abit like a Diesel engine... not sure if they are the lifters or tuppets... it sounds to me as if they are coming from the belts but i am quite sure its not from the belts... so does it mean that my 69Ks TL would need a 10W-50 penrite HPR10 to make it sound nice and new again?

Mine was having the same tick tick when hot and yes, the engine has low milage too, 65,000kms. I put Motul oil and Nulon engine treatment in and tried that 3000 rpm 30 secs cycles for few times and I am sure the lifters are very quite now, still some minor rattly sounds coming from that belts area when hot. Finally decided to ignore it as a new or near new Engine will only cost about $1200, so wats the hec?:gtfo: Rattles are common for Magna Engines.:D
There is no certainty that 10W-50 will cure your problem, but u can give it a go. To be honest, for aussie weather 5W-40 or 10W-50 sud not matter at all for Magna engines.
Its the ******* magna tranny that is highly sensitive to tranny oil and its expensive to replace tranny.
Oil doesn't have 'weights' it has viscosity ratings.

whats a 50 weight oil then hmmm?
The W stands for Winter in the first number ie the viscosity of the oil at low temperature. The second number is the viscosity at 100 °C.

Hey it sound like u are having problems in your tranny?? if you are having any problem the first thing i would check would be for sticky "valves" is the tranny that they called solonoid or something like that.. that was what cause my tranny to go.... its the simple $150 thing that caused me to replace the whole tranny... but if the problem is found early, its just a simple $150 fix....

Thanks for the advice, mate. Tranny is still doing good and I am doing everything I can to keep it alive lol (had a trans flush and relay update/upgrade on computer by Mitshi dealer and bought a magna with no tow bar). But I know - Magna tranny will be the last thing you can trust in.

i'm using mobil 1 5W-50 that it seems to like it alot... its about $60-$70 a bottle depending on where you get it. I've beaten a VL from a stand still (VL was still rolling) and on the move so it can't be thats bad an oil.
The VL wasn't stock. But don't know whats under the bonnet.
Arguments to support claim:
1. Loud exhaust note, don't remember hearing a turbo but if he did have one, he would probably have sold the car by now.
2. Most VL's in the western suburbs of Melbourne aren't stock. Most are fully sick!!!
3. Tried me about 3 times and gave up. If it was stock, you'd give up after 1 try.

WTF does this have to do with the topic at hand?
Are you trying to say that your oil made all the difference in beating a VL?
Nubcake!
In my Sports, i am using Mobil 10W40 and no issues yet.

How did the oil change go? Any luck with the noise?
Decided to go with the thinner oil for a try.... the shell eco10 thinking that if it didnt make the noise go away at least i would be saving petrol... hahaha... anyway the noise didnt go away... but it became softer.. i am just about going to give up with the noise thingy... but gonna give the "economy" oil a go and see how it goes... give it another 3 weeks to see what happens... to my surprise the oil which i had only used for 1500kms is already abit brown... but now its golden... hahaha... gonna put an injector cleaner tom to see how everything goes... thanks for asking anyway... hahaha..

According to the manual in our kind of weather for the 3.5Ls it recomends 10w-30.
Personally I use NEO platinum 10w-30 (probably not many people here have hard of it, it's relatively litte-known over here, pretty popular in motorsport circles).
Given your engine should be in good nick, I recomend a fully synthetic 10w-30. Also apparently aussie-made oils are crap, so maybe stay away from Mobil 1 etc.
Basically what seperates good oils from bad ones is the level of detergency (capacity to suspend crap), and how well it holds its viscousity over time/km/heat cycles.
Really for a purely street-driven car there's no need to go overkill on oil, as long as you get something half-decent and change it regularly it'll be sweet.
If you intend to do track days then go for quality stuff. Reason being without an oil cooler you can hit oil temps of 120 deg c+...cheap oils won't hold their viscousity very well at those kind of temps and hot/cold cycles.

Is Mobil 1 Aussie??? Never see Mobil1 stations here anymore, so thought they are American or something. Saying that, got no idea what oil brands are aussie or not...

I had the slight tappet noise aswell, on my TH I just bought, ran an engine oil flush in it for bout 100klms, dropped the oil and filled with Penrite HPR10(as recommended on penrite site for TH). No noise what so ever now and whilst it didnt make a huge difference in power(of course), it made the car rev free-er and is sitting on 9.2ltrs - 100klms after 2 tanks.
