View Full Version : Fader/volume resistor ohms?

Quick Q; what's a good ohm range for a simple diy volume control, for a plain old head unit (Sony CDX-GT150)?

I have 6" door speakers and the stock 4" dash speakers running off the same output, when held near each other they sound about the same volume, but when the 6ers are in the door, because they are much lower down, they are overwhelmed by the 4's.
So, just thought I'd get some simple trimpots, put them inline with the 4's, tweak 'em until there's a reasonable balance, and leave it there. So; any thoughts on what sort of resistance range and type would best suit? 10k? 50k? linear? log?

PS. Yes I'm sure the audiophiles out there are having fits over my setup, but it does what I need it to do. (6x9's on the rear line BTW). Cheap'n'simple, and sounds fine at the background levels I usually run it at.

bump... :bump: Anyone? No-one? I've tried googling numerous times with no result...

A trimpot wont take the power. You will end up with foul smelling smoke.

Have a look for an L-Pad control as used in crossover systems - keeps a consistent impedence.

Huh, screw that for a joke, the speakers aren't worth $30, let alone paying that much for a fader to get 'em to the right level.
Surely a simple wirewound pot should do the trick? That's all the old car stereo faders used to be, I just don't know what kind of resistance they were running. Maybe a trimpot might be a bit light on, but shouldn't need to pay more than $5 for a pair of pots to do the trick.

Try finding a decent wattage wirewound, dual gang... Jaycar have a 5 ohm, but single gang only for $10, you need 2, so $20 at least.

Personally if you want to do it cheap, get yourself a selection of 5W wirewound resistors at 0.30c each.

As I said previously, it's just going to be a "set and forget" thing, for very basic balancing between the two sets of speakers.
