View Full Version : CV Boot Split !! ??

Got to uni today and after I parked the car and started to walk off I noticed my front left wheel was unusually dirty, and on closer inspection realised it was grease, which was all in the inside of the rim and guard, so obvisouly, though I havent had a good look yet, the CV boot has split.
Is this a highly urgent job, as the lack of grease will stuff up the CV joint??? Also how much can I expect to pay to get the boot replaced, and also is it easy to do myself??
Cheers for any help in advance.

Same thing happened to me this week. Mechanic told me the joint will dry up fairly quick like that. Getting both shafts replaced for $550 fitted and $20 from a detailer to get the wheel clean again. Hope this helps!!

get changed asap, busted both my boots, only set me back 75 bucks to replace with new boot and grease. cheaper than replacing whole shaft

 Far out, didnt realise it would be so expensive, ill have to try get it fixed ASAP. Why are replacing your shafts if it is just your boot that has split ??? Im hoping getting just the boot replaced will be somewhat cheaper
Cheers for the heads up.

simple enough to replace. there was a bit on it in the 2nd gen section I think. the boot'll cost ya 20 or 30bucks from auto barn..it comes with new clamps and grease. you should be fine to just rip it out and chuck it back on.
EDIT- yes...quite urgent! lol

Cheers Lenny, lucky the boot is a bit cheaper. Do you think I should avoid driving it to work until it gets fixed, or is drivign it for a couple of days until its booked in and fixed ok ???

Hmm, might just buy a kit and do it myself if its as simple as rip it out and chuck it back on.... Is it really that simple / quick / easy ?

very simple operation if you have some basic tools and mechanical knowlage

it took me and my dad the whole of two hours to remove, clean, fiddle, put boots back on and put back in. BOTH sides. so nah, it shouldn't take too long.
the hardest part is getting the CV Joint out of the brake rotor...after that, they kinda just, pop out...

My sharts needed replacing anyway from when I lowered the car. It developed a bad vibration under load and they traced it back to them!!!

pain in the **** need to take out the wheel off and wat not. easier if u get a mechanic to do take them like 40 mins. prob take u longer. easier to let them do it. yeah avoid driving it. just make sure u dont go in water or dirt. dont want either one of those getting into the shaft. once that happens. u may need to replace.
Hmmm, it's harder to replace just a boot. You'll have to take the shaft out, and pull the joint apart so that you can get the thin end of the boot on the shaft, then put the joint back together and restrap and pack the boot with grease.
Easier to just get another shaft plus CVs for between $100-$150 and pull the shaft out and replace it. This option might be a better one aswell if you find out that the inner boot on the same shaft is split aswell.
