Hey guys, i've done a quick search on this however i couldn't find what im after.

Ok heres my problem... I've got a 2002 Verada Ei, which over the last few months has started to emit smells that can only be matched by my farts :p (just kidding)

Whenever i apply more than the usual amount of pressure to the throttle, a rotten egg smell appears and im sick of it! I know that it's the Cat, i've been told by a few mechanics now but i have a question for you guys.

What price should i be looking at to replace the Cat, i've been quoted a few different prices, but i figured that surely some of you people have had this changed in the past and could give me a figure.

Thanks!

Cat installed shouldn't be anymore than $350 or so. Get a quality metalcat cat - $300 - install about one hours labour.

Right on the money.

Don't skimp with a cheap CAT, it's been shown cheapo ceramic-cored CATS can actually flow worse than factory ones.

Whatever brand of CAT you get, make sure it's a quality metal-cored item, should cost around the $300 mark, depending on exactly what you get in what size.

Might as well get a highflow while you're there. Installed shouldn't be any more than $400.

lol or just shove a 2.5" pipe through the guts of ya cat and weld it in place then grind back the welds so the gasket will go back on and bavoom straight through cat
highly illegal though

i did say it was illegal
and yes it will fix his problem
the filters in the cat are wearing out and that is what's causing the smell
stright through cat will remove the filters and therefore remove the smell
and if it's piped then it won't sound tinny

not that i'd know of course

yeah a mate did it
took a cat into an exhaust shop and said "what kind of pipe would i need to fit this?
exhaust guy says "you do realise that's a 10,000 fine to do that and we can also be held accountable"
so my mate lowers the cat behind the counter and says "ok forget you saw that"
lets just say strictly for competition use...

yeah that's what i was thinking too, Does being an AMC Member happen to give you a discount at a Mr Muffler (or something similar?)
I gotta start saving $300 now, damn... i'd rather use it on a holiday. Ah well

Yeah i donno about that pipe thing, i cant afford $300 atm, let alone getting done and copping a 10K fine coz i own a stock (yet illegal) verada :P

if you bought it and installed it yourself you might save a few $$$.
Same again if you bought one from a wrecker(not sure if this is legal though)

the prob with buying cats from a wreckers is you could well get one that's in the same cond as the one you're replacing
and to the guy with the evo yeah you're right
my "mates" car spits a small flame on downshift when driven hard

Ok i spoke to some exhaust people today, they were convinced it's not the Cat that's the problem, they say it's most likely a bad batch of fuel or the oxygen sensor.

They gave me a couple of solutions:

Flush the cat with some sort of cleaning oil that they have ($130)
Replace the cat with a universal one ($270)
Check the oxygen sensor (no price stated)

i donno, i like the sound of that cleaning oil... anyone tried this before?

What about going to a wrecker and getting a stockie with low k's ?
At least check out the cost of the option.

I u have access to the approprate tools you should be able to check the cat urself...
take it off an shine a light through the other end... look through the cat and if its not melted and if you can see trough the majority of the little square holes it should be OK. Will
eliminate one of the possibilites..

And Cleaning OIL for cats? Neve heard of such a thing?

I agree. Once a cat starts going, there is no saving it, wear and tear iteem.
