Well simply put i don't know **** about towing anything anywhere ever.
Hook it up and if you don't pull the ass off your car you win eh?
I'm wanting to know what the towing capacities of a TJ is, if anything can increase that capacity, what gear is good towing gear... All that stuff.
I move vac pumps and compressors mostly. Nothing weighing over a tonne total. Once moved my sisters lancer on a trailer... but very slowly.
My tow ball has '3.5T gross' engraved on it. Does that mean its capable of that pull? even if the ball is capable of it, is the car?
I wanna know what the limits are before i damage my car.

A few of the simple rules i know of:
You can't tow more than your cars weight (for obvious reasons).
The highest magna towing capacity i know of is 1500kg brake assisted. A transmission oil cooler is always recommended for autos with heavy towing no matter what car you drive.

1500 kg is the max for a third gen Magna, as long as the trailer has brakes, and you have a 1500 kg rated towbar (not towball). Your towbar will have a compliance plate with it's tow capacity (get down under it and look up)!
"Braked trailer"means you'll have a $200-300 trailer brake controller in the car and wiring to suit. For example I've got a Tekonsha Prodigy (http://www.rvdirect.com.au/?Nav=Pdt&product_id=1948&category_id=9&sub_category_id=56&PageID=8&wp=8) for our 910 kg Jayco Eagle camper trailer.
750 kg is the max weight for an unbraked trailer from memory.

Do MMAL have a aftermarket (factory) trans cooler option? If so does anyone have a rough estimate of cost?

i just fitted a 1500kg towbar to my wagon. ive been using it to tow a tradesmans trailer and canopy and loaded with tools and materials id be pushing (pulling :)) at least 1000kg's. my 3.5 does it with ease but it is a manual. braking is ok but of course there is more pedal required for the added weight.
the weight on the towball doesnt mean your car will pull that amount. its the actual amount the ball will hold.

HA!
I towed a TS wagon and a ****ing huge car trailer the other week, all on 19"s and Kings Low Springs.
Just allow ALOT of room for braking.

id believe that! the 3.5 has a fair whack of power to tow, i can still overtake very well on the highway with it fully loaded!

More accurately, it's the shear strength, so with a 1500 kg load (the Magna's maximum) you can only be in a 2.3 G collision before a 3500 kg ball shears off (and then you're wearing the trailer in the car).
As far as transmission coolers go, I've read on the forum that second gen trans oil coolers will bolt onto third gens. Repco et al also have aftermarket ones for $100 or so. I haven't decided which way to go for my car yet. I put an aftermarket one on my old VN Commodore - it's a pretty easy job... though I like the sound of one that just "fits" my Magna.
