View Full Version : Coolant on Front Passenger Floor?
When I sat in my car today I realised the floor in the front passenger was completely wet with coolant again... Now, I thought there might be a leak in my radiator hoses... But I've checked them, they are still new as I've changed it very recently and fitted properly.
I can't seem to find any coolant traces on the firewall... How the heck did the coolant completely soak up on the front passenger floor?! I realised everytime I fill the reserve tank it disappears quickly. Surely there's a leak somewhere, do you guys know whats the fix?
Cheers guys.

Its probably a leaking heater core. Fill the tank, get the car up to temp, then turn the car off and listen under the dash to see if you can hear a hissing sound, or identify where the leak is coming from.

I can't seem to identify where the leak is comming from, there is no hissing sound.
Thanks.

Tried to take some engine pics, but there isn't anything unusual in there.

The heater core is on the inside of the firewall under the dash. I doubt the leak is on the engine bay side of the firewall.

How do I access the heater core, this is underneath the dash on the passenger side right? more so- how does it look like? If thats the problem, what needs to be replaced?
Alright, Im convinced that it should be the heater core. Now I have no idea how to change this or what it looks like. What part of the dash should I take out?

it will be inside the heater box assembly. Up underneath the passengers side of the dash. Not sure what you have to take out to get to it, but ti will look like a small radiator. Probably have coolant coming out of it too!:D

lol u for real?! i just pulled out the center console and i saw a black box. do i need to specifically goto wreckers to find one? or can i goto an auto spare part shop and order it? about how much am I looking forward to one?
It looks like im gonna drive around without turning heater on. that won't can't it to leak aye?

As a temporary measure you could try disconnecting the heater hoses and bypassing the heater core till you sort it. At least this way it saves you flooding your car with coolant.

its definatly the heater core thats got a hole and its leaking thru that into the passenger compartment - it must be a big hole for that much to leak into the passenger foot well.
its a big and expensive job - when mine died in one of my old cars, cost me 450 inc the core and labour, but it took a week to get done.
if your competent in pulling things apart and putting them all back together correctly.
IMO - easier to take it to someone else and pay them to have the big headaches.

The seals for the core are like $2 each.
And labour to install is about $400.
I did this very repair only a month ago, just for fun and so I didn't have to pull the dash out again I got the Heater Core, O Rings, and the conector Pipes cost me around $180 Trade at Chadstone Mitsubishi, it's at least an all day job, and there is only one short cut, well I lied there is no short cut, you must pull the whole dash out, but if you take your time it's not that hard a job, getting the smell of coolant out of the car, well that took weeks.

Sorry to say not running with the heater on wont do anything to stop the leak. The coolant flows through the core whether the heater is on or not. There is a flap inside the box where the core is that either directs the incoming air through the core or past it, depending on whether you have the controls on heat or cool. As said, you will need to remove the whole dash panel to get to the box holding the core. Only way around it is to bypass the heater core on the engine bay side of the firewall. Where the pipes go into the firewall, unclamp both the inlet and outlet pipes and connect them together using a joiner pipe.

Sounds like the same cause. Coolant isn't a very healthy thing to breathe by the way. You might want to get it fixed asap.

I've had a slight smell in my car lately so I rang the local Natrad bloke and he is going to check it for me tomorrow after work. He's going to pull a panel off under the passenger side of the dash and have a looksee.
He reckons if it's needed it's a 2 day job and costs twice as much for a magna (nearly $700) as it does for a camry (that was about $300) and the magnas are more prone to it than any other car. I've just had cruise control installed and cv shafts replaced - lucky I'm working again, but still hoping it's something less expensive.

It's expensive because you have to pull the whole dash out, I've just done this repair and I can tell you it wasn't fun.
Thanks guys... I appreciate all your replies very very much, so grateful that Im not left alone with this issue! Now that I would need to sacrifice alot of my time for this crap. I guess I need to bypass the stuff for now as I don't have a spare 400 lying around or anytime on my hands. It sure is a pain. Yeah, I tried to run the car without any heater or fans and it still flooded like a swamp. What I need to know is, where do I start pulling out the dash? (Okay, I know how to take off the center console, the bottom panel on drivers side where the ignition is, but what about the rest?) Has anyone got a diagram available?
Again, I appreciate all your help very very much,
