but its a ralliart... or is it in the vrx as well?

and reason... because MMAL had to bring costs down, a thumping stereo wasnt gonna affect sales methinks

Looks like a nice ride, now getting off topic I wonder why Mitsubishi didn't keep exporting diamantes and then 380's as galant's, seems stupid to have 2 factories producing virtually the same car. Would have been alot better for the future of Tonsley pk and it's workers

The Galant in the US has been around in this shape for several years. I don't think it would have been wise to move manufacturing out of the country just to try and rationalise production to a single factory especially given the changes to the Australian model and the small number of vehicles that would be made when compared to the US production. Add to that the extra cost of shipping across the world just to save on a build location.

Don't forget that the Verada exported as Diamante was a small number compared to the overall sales in the US and we simply took over where Japan left off with the previous, early 90's shape, Diamante which was also available in a 2 door model. Australia took over with the last Magna models for the US and Japan in the Diamante model production. The Diamante's I saw in Japan, with Oz production details, were better spec'd in a lot of cases as were the US models because that is what the customer expected from the high end luxury offerings. The US model also had the US radio pack that was available for other US MMC vehicles at the time and I believe it was fitted here.

The Galant was already esonced in the US market well before the 380. We probably only got the same shape as a byproduct of the need to shave costs on a new model introduction here in Oz given the shape of MMC here and worldwide. I think it was a wise move and, having driven the US Galant as a rental some years back, I can say that I think Tonsley Park have done a good job in transforming the 380 to what you see here now.

To get back on topic, the Rockford system shown in the clip can be purchased in the US from parts suppliers as can the navigation system but, at four figures, I won't be contemplating the change. You may also need to purchase new door trims etc. to fit any extra speakers for the rear doors. Plus, with the fascia being a different colour combo, you'd be looking at a full set of fascia panels to match it in properly. The Pajero's and other Japan built models, come with the same system because that is where they are manufactured. In fact Mitsubishi produces all of the radio/audio gear there and ship worldwide. Now there is economy of scale. Cheers...

Only saw these in the US and they were the old mid nineties shape Magna/Verada. They were produced in Japan and shipped to the US. A friend of mine in Silicon Valley had a gold coloured one. Interior was identical to the Oz Verada of which I had the Ei wagon at the time. I'll try and get in touch with him and see if he can send a pic if he has one...

true dat, having owned a galant before i checked out what the US galant owners do to theirs...awesome stuff, hot cars :) the US had the galant and Diamante going against each other, so in the end the galant had more sales so it won out, Diamante got dropped.

Yep, my memory may be failing me, it was over ten years ago now. I can't find any references anywhere to the model I remember seeing. The guy who had it moved to a Mini when they came out and I haven't been in touch for about three years. I have the image in my minds eye but, without any hard evidence, it's just fantasy. If I can track him down I'll find out if it was as I remember. Cheers...

stuff the stereo - id want the 'projector style headlamps'

surely tho... people swap out the standard headunit for something that is more to thier liking / tastes which 9times outa 10 is much better than any standard offering from a car company!

il go hide back in 3rd gen now :P

Where is the 2 door Magna/Diamante car everyone is referring to in this YouTube link. All I see is a Galant (with 4 doors). Or is it one of those 90s illusions where you squint really hard...

Don't hold your breath for this. I can't get a reply from the former workmate in the US. It may well have been a Galant in its earlier form that I remember. Sorry to get everyone hot under the collar but it does show the level of knowledge in the group. If I ever get back to the US and catch up with the guy I will get the definitive answer but just chalk this one up to failing memory. Cheers...

Oh, okay. A 2-door Verada/Diamante (if that is what you are talking about) would be very nice thing to see. What year model/generation no. are you talking about? Any pics?

There's nothing stopping an aussie 380 owner from chucking an amp on the factory head unit. I plan to do it as the 380 stereo that is moulded into the dash sounds like crap.
But yes i reckon Mitsubishi should give people the option of including any one of the many Galant model's features. Just because Mitsubishi cant afford them here doesnt mean we cant :P
