View Full Version : Squeaking Noise From Front Area

Yesterday i noticed a squeaking noise coming from the front area of my Verada. The noise is relative to the circular motion of the front wheels and begins at about 10km/h. It continues till about 60 km/h after which the noise either goes away or is still there but drowned out by other noises (engine, exhaust, and road nosie).
Between 10km/h and 60km/h when the noise is audible, i can make it go away if i apply the brakes but comes back when i go off the brakes. I took both the front wheels off for a look see but couldn't find anything wrong.
The only recent changes made to the front end were the AWD Magna twin piston brake upgrade and a wheel alignment and balance.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? If i can't fix it this weekend i'll prolly just have the mechanic look at it on Monday.

Yeah sounds like disc brake squeek.
If you've just put em in give it a 100K or so to settle down.
If it wont shut up take the pads out and put some "disc brake quiet" on the back of the pads. You can get it from autobarn etc.
It may also be a little dirt build up, pop off the wheel and give the caliper a bit of a hose off, when its cold.:D

lower ball joints squeek
mice dont get a chance to squeek when being run over by a verada:badgrin:

It may also be your wheel bearings.

Press yur brake pedal slowly and gently while moving, if it goes away b4 you feel the car braking its probably the pads squeeking.

Depends on which end of em you hit first

It definitely isn't disc brake squeal as the new brakes were put in a few hundred km ago and are fully bedded in. Also, it does not sound like disc brake squeal as that is normally a continuous high pitched squeal (squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal) lol
The one i'm hearing comes and goes with each rotation of the front wheel (squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak), like when you do the horizontal mumbo on a old squeakly bed

have a mate bounce the front end of the car for you while you hop under to investigate
there is an anti brake disc squeek product on the market the nose it to do with the shims at the back of the brake disc or that shim is missing
look out for mice lol

Hmmm....relative to the circular motion of the wheels.
You say it is squeeking, but is it like you had a box of china dishes in the car??
I had a similar problem and it was the brake back plate hitting off the disk or something.
Couldn't actually see where it was hitting but removed the wheel and tapped the back plate with a mallet all the way round to increase the distance.
Is it worse/louder on cornering??

Jack the front wheel up. Turn it and see if the squeak is still there, if so remove the wheel and see if you can track it down by listening and looking as you rotate the disc.

Best advice so far. Start with simple tests then go from there.

Funny you should mention it as that's exactly what i've just experienced. The noise has become louder tonight after I returned from an enthusiastic drive in Eltham. The noise is still there when driving in a straight line but gets louder and faster if i turn to the left. If i turn to the right the noise goes away completely.
Do you think brake shims could be affected by turning one way or the other? Or maybe it's the wheel bearings? There's some good advice in here so i'll see if i can narrow the problem down tomorrow.

do as rod -d suggests
then go a step further about the bearings
turning right and no noise may mean noise is the left cv joint driveshaft
mouse killer !

The symptoms you say are mostly like I had and it was the brake back plate hitting the disk, worse on corners but still there on a straight line, as I said a tap all around the back plate with a mallet fixed it.
Some slight differences tho'.....my noise was more like the tinckling of china dishes and didn't get faster on corners, but was louder.
Worth keeping in mind as it costs nothing to fix
Did this happen immediately after the brake upgrade??.....cause they would have been messing about with the back plate

I have a similar noise in my TP which only comes back a few times a year, then disappears completely again. Usually seems to happen after a bit of heavy driving, and is sort of consistent with the wheels rotating. I have a feeling it may be warped rotors in my case though as the braking pulses a bit... either that or wheel bearings.

I agree with veradabeast. I'd say it's your bearings, most likely on the front right.

I had a mechanic next to my work have a look at the problem today. He said he couldn't find anything wrong and blamed it on the brake pads. He was however able to fix a problem with the handbrake shoes though.
I'm gonna take the car back to Hightek Brakes on Wednesday who were the ones that did the brake upgrade just over a month ago. Let's see what happens...

Hightek Brakes had a look at my car today and no problem could be found with the braking system. I'll have to have my regular mechanic look at it when i get a chance and see what he says.

He couldn't find anything wrong with the car either. He said he has never had to replace the wheel bearings in a 3rd gen Magna yet and was 100% sure the noise was due to the compound of the Geenstuff pads.
Took my car to Brakes Plus in Nunawading who replaced the EBC Greenstuff pads with QFM Premium Plus pads. Noise is totally gone now and the car brakes just as good as it did when the Greenstuffs were on.
But i still can't explain why the rotational squeaking noise was only there when i wasn't braking. But nonetheless, at least this is one problem that can now be put to rest :)
