View Full Version : Question for the purists
The most recent addition to my car audio "family" has had a bolster with the addition of a yank friend.

(1512)
The info sheet that came with it talks about connecting copper-on-copper rather than the traditional style of solder and shrink/tape, rather using wire-nuts or terminal ends (which i would assume are far less reliable than solder) but their point is the less resistance the better.
What do you guys use to connect your woofer to your amplifier? I was going to use terminal posts on the box I am making but now I may just do as DD says and run the wires through the port perhaps...

niiiiiice sub!!!
How much did it cost if you don't mind me asking, as I am interested in upgrading my Response sub...
Ask Mark (Ford Fella) about a deal, he did me a good price ;)
That is of course, if you live in Brisbane..
FHRX Studios post them but wont give you a better price.

depending on the driver i usually solde onto the terminals, but unless you have golden ears i doubt you let alone anyone could tell the difference between a woofer thats hard wired and one wired via a terminal cup... enjoy the dd champ, good woofers, not my cuppa tea but still good none the less

thats a mighty fine sub you got yourself there ;) you could put two wires through the wood then fill it with silicone, drill the holes at an approx size of the wire... might work?

terminal block
can't see why you would do it any other way:confused:

Yeah agreed. Terminal block is the easiest.
I think FHRX has the 1512 for $270...

Just looked on his website... $319.
It also says 900W, is this PMPO or RMS?
lol PMPO, havent heard that in a while :P
as long as its secure, anything will be fine to wire up the sub mate. solder most preferred. personally i drill the sub box and resin up the gaps that the wire runs through
Well I'm going to go with the preferred wire-nut and just tape it on to make sure it's double secure. Solder has greater resistance than just slamming the wires together and since I'm only running 500wrms into it (even though thats recommended) I know through countless people saying "Only 500wrms?! DD's can take a LOT more than that", I'd rather have the least amount of resistance possible to keep my power clean and as high as I can.

Just the other day someone posted up on MEA (old Car Audio Australia) that they are running two 512's with 750WRMS through each. They are rated at 400WRMS and the 1512's are rated at 500WRMS which people have pumped 1KWRMS through so they are built tough for this very reason. Powaaaaah!
NOW! I'm going to be building a single 12" 40Hz slot ported box to DDaus Phil's design. The catch is one 25mm 2440x1200 sheet of MDF can make TWO boxes. IS ANYONE INSTERESTED IN BUYING A SECOND COMPLETE OR CUT-BUT-NOT-ASSEMBLED BOX?
Design is here for those interested : Linkity-Link-Link. (http://web.aanet.com.au/naa/DDBox12inch.pdf)

Easiest way for me was i drilled some holes in the box, ran the wires through and filled it up with bluetac:d

i put 10awg thru a hole in the side of the box and siliconed it up tight, then used 8awg screw down wire joiners.

Twisting wires vs soldering - written by someone who has never dealt with real high power electronics.
A bad twist or crimp will cause a fire - at the point of contact, you will either char off the insulation or get nasty arcing. Car audio amplifiers really aren't exactly high power electronics though - only a couple of KW at the most - not enough to do anything real exciting. Google 'fault currents' for some fun.
I might go a little experiment at work today and see how much resistance is gained when soldering 12g together.
then add the postageeeee
When we post stuff out we always use registered and insured postage. However, we pay half so it's not that expensive at all. ;)

Who can complain about that?! That's fair!

and its good its sent that way because I have had heaps of stuff sent, only 1 thing went missing but of course it was insured!
Faaaaaaaaaaaaanboooooooooooooooooooooy.
Only kidding.. Half..
Ended up just soldering my 12g cable onto the sub (that has 12g wire instead of terminals) and man that was a bitch to get a neat solder from such thick cables and then pull the 5mm heat-shrink over. Next time I drive past Jaycar I'm getting one of those alligator clip vice things..
Here's my Saturday night story.. No clubs, no alcohol, not even any music just lots of swearing and **** going wrong..
(Pasted from MEA)
Well paint me brown and call me Snappy Tom.
I can say I had a very interesting day. I was supposed to go to Brett's Timber @ New Market after dropping off my fiance to get her hair cut so I could get my MDF cut and get some enamel undercoat to paint the port. That was all good apart from B105 being there which meant every tight-bum on the northside was there to try and scab something so - NO PARK FOR YOU!!@@$~
After finally getting my MDF cut by a self confessed "cabinet maker by trade, i do heaps of speaker boxes for my friends, even ones in your house!" (to which my only thought reply was WOW THEY PUT SPEAKER BOXES IN HOUSES?!?! HOLY f***!@##~ But i just went "MMMmm" instead.. I knew he was going to be trouble), paint bought (and tinted from the very nice paint man who was ever so eager to help out and will get fisted by myself today) We proceeded too my parents house where my father was waiting to help me assemble the box (and share his horde of tools) Not long after we find out that mr "Cabinet Maker" had cut ALL the pieces on the job side, so the box is sub 3mm everywhere!@!#!@~ Not only that but it was as square as a f***ing circle. You could've done a better job with a hand-saw, he even had measuring tape and a rip saw so what was his bloody problem? offset eyes? maybe he lives on a hill and his head is always tilted.
So I proceed to say "f*** it, I've mucked around enough today, lets just put the bastard together", which lead to an onslaught of 3 hours of food starvation delirium. Next thing was we noticed the paint man who was ever so keen to help out sold me f***ING ACRYLIC UNDERCOAT.. I said to him I was using "Flat black enamel" and what's he go and do? GIVE ME ACRYLIC@!!@!@@$~!#@#$t%euI8U..
By this time I'm to go down to Brett's, even though they're closed and hurl the paint can at the front door and finger paint pure words of evil at them, after-all I've been waiting for about 2 1/2 months for this all to eventuate..
THEN do we realise that our box, which is 290.. high... for a 12" subwoofer.. That gives us a bee's dick of room to cut a hole, but that was no problem, apart from we forgot to take out the 8-10g screws at the very edge of the box & hole "BZZZZTRTTTTTTTTTTRTRT What's that?! - f*** it! The Screw!!@#~" and he continues on..
Finally we have the box in the car and home.. One thing that keeps my body tempreature about 2 degree's higher than it should be is Brett's timber & crapware.. Should I go back and unleash my fist of fury on every anus that is in a green shirt (their uniform) or not.. I'm thinking if I go near them I will either:
A) Get T-boned by a truck not stopping at a red light/stop sign/etc
B) Bludgeon someone to death with a paint tin/off-cut of MDF
C) Show Mr "Cabinet Maker" how to make a square cut on his rip-saw.. on his LEG..
I must say that in spite of all the screw arounds and crapty workmanship shown by this company that I shall never again grace the floors of - I'm still not totally fuming, at least I have my DD in a box, that didn't cost me $500, at least I have my health and a cold and finally, at least I've got a great story for work on Monday. 'Flaming Mongrels'.

Sorry dude I shouldn't laugh, you sound like you had a hell of a day, but hey I like trying to see the funny side...
I would at some stage though go in and just put a complaint in, as it sounds their customer service was pretty crap.
Enjoy the new bass though! :)

go there and make lotsa noise and a fuss
usually gets you free stuff :)
I'd rather just get one person not to buy their gear from them to be perfectly honest.. The only reason I went there was because they were the only place I could find that:
A) Sold 25mm MDF and
B) Would cut it.
We did laugh, the entire time we were screwing and gluing and how **** it turned out BUT it sounds good so that's what counts.. Now I just need to tune it all.
