hey guys i was wondering since most of the members are using HPR10 which is 10W-50, why are there still like 50% of the members saying that 50 engine oils are too thick?? is penrite oil just special or does the magna actually take like oils that are 50?? some even recommend penrite SIN 5 which is 5W-60!!! just need to clear my doubts as i am gonna change my engine oil in 2 months when i'm gonna go on a road trip from brissy to Mel to Syd and Canberra and back of course... Summer + long distance i personally feel that a thicker oil should be the one to use... but again some had advice me not to go that thick as the engine might not be able to pump the thick oil up fast enough... wouldnt want the car to overheat on such a trip especially when my parents are on board... so all advice would be appreciated...

I use SiN 5W60 in my TL, and it hasn't given me any problems. If your ~3 year old engine is struggling to pump oil around itself, then there's something seriously wrong with it.

I was under the impression that thicker oils are recomended for tired engines?
As newer engines have the tighter tolerances and therefore need thinner oils?
Could be my simple mind in overdrive....:bowrofl:

Don't worry. A 5 or 10W is about what you need for good start up protection and the second figure about 50 or 60 will give you great protection when thrashing it.
Go for the HPR 10.
Just because the second figure is high, it doesnt mean that its a thick gluggy oil. It basically means that it doesn't thin out at high temperature. In other words - it maintains its viscosity up high.

if you put a thicker oil in it than than mitsu advises you'll find you'll flog out your bearings due to the fact that the tolerances are to tight for the thicker oil to be pumped into them.
Use 5/10W40

Agreed, 10w-50 is too thick.
Use 10w-30 or 40, both are recomended by the mitsu manual.

My dad has used Mobile 1, 5-50 in his TF Sports since about 10,000km. It now has about 110,000 and is one of the quiestest engines I've seen.

Yes thicker oils are used mainly for older engines due to the large clearances. Using a thicker oil in a modern engine just makes them run poorly, and tends not to lubricate as well as thinner oils. Generally, for older engines get oil between 15W-40 and 20W-50 and above, for modern engines in mainstream market, you should usually look at things between 10/15W-30, and 15W-40 (for older modern engines), while for heavily modded modern or sports-oriented cars, use oils below this.
As for brands, the best way is to just try out different oils and find which one runs better in the car. Penrite is usually a good bet, or even the Mitsubishi genuine oil isn't all that bad I've found.

I use 10-40w semi synthetic oil and had no problems and do about 800-900 kms a week, car has 164,000 on the clock and doing well.
I have a TL VR-X

my engine has done over 260,000kms and im using 20W-50 is that bad?, mind u that my engine does not burn/use any oil and does not leak any.

Dude, this is the 4th thread you have posted on oil choice in the last month. I'm interested to know how you come to the conclusion that "most of the members are using HPR10".
How about you just change your oil already??
read your manuals it tell you what to use
depends on where you live

Calm down black beard! hujared truely loves his Magna and is trying to make sure she runs on the best oil! We should appreciate a true Magna Lover.
Oil is a subjective issue and lets try to help him to make a choice.

just have a look at all the replies and see for yourself... i can strongly conclude that 60% of the members in the forum uses only these few brands of engine oil
-penrite HPR10
-mobil ??
-motul turbolight 4100
-castrol magnatec/GTX3
and with that its obvious that only penrite has a weight of 50 while the rest has 40... so i wondering why is penrite so special.... i am looking at getting response from members such as u who has like 3000-4000 threads... assuming that you guys would know more... but if i have bothered you so much u can easily ignore the thread... i am sure many members have this question in their head but no one has ever cleared their doubt...

Kind of contradicting, you are saying that its just bloody oil but what you put in doesnt seem to be cheap or something u can get at K-mart or supercheap...

trust me he got the oil at supercheap, he works there
medium priced oils are very similar mate, just pick the right viscosity and your away

Its $40 for the 10-40
Which is only like $12 more then GTX3 or something, so pretty cheap

just try stuff, its not going to harm your engine as long as its not a radical choice. Find something you like.
I had a limited choice for my change today so i put some hpr10 in; i dont like it. Tappets are still noisey, doesnt sound good enough to my ears. But i have a different engine to you.

ok ok now im really confused. if an oil is 10W-40, is the 40 the viscosity on startup and the 10 the running temperature viscosity or is it the other way around????

its the other way around... 10W is the viscosity when cold (winter) and 40 would be its viscosity when hot...

huhjared - I've answered this question for you quite a few times man. HPR 10 will probably be too thick for your car. If I were you, I'd use a 5W40 or 10W40. I've used 10W40 (Motul 300V) on my Ralliart since I've owned it and the engine is very smooth and quiet. Or - for the price you can't go past Mobil 1 or Penrite (something in the 5W-40 or 10W40)

reply of penrite.....
Hello,
Thank you for your enquiry.
HPR 10 SAE 10W50 is a multigrade engine Oil.
It is made up of 2 measurements, that are largely independent of each
other. In both instances as the grade gets higher, the oil becomes
thicker.
The 10W part is its winter weight and indicates how thick the oil will
be at cold start up.
The 50 Part indicates that it is equivalent in thickness to an SAE 50
mono grade oil at operating temperature. (around 100 degrees Celcius)
An SAE 50 grade will be equivalent in thickness to an SAE 30 grade oil
at a certain temperature range.
On this basis we have recommeded HPR 10 SAE 10W50 as being suitable for
your vehicle.
I have attached a Product Sheet on HPR 10 for your information.
