Once I get the chance, I'll post my new exhaust. It purrs. Though, as the guy at the exhaust shop said, it will get ricey towards the top of the revs.

Basically get a 2.5" system with a straight-through muffler (lukey, etc.). I got a twin setup, and I'll create a thread soon with pics. It's damn loud, but its really nice. Purrs nicely too.

For an 4cyl you'd only want 2.25, they have negative top-end so there's no point in worrying about plenty of flow unless you're going to port the heads and get a cam etc (I.E. add a LOT more revving performance) 2.25" press bent will infact give you more like 2" or 2.1" because like the name states, when it bends it presses in the pipe and restricts the system so it's always better to go a quarter to half inch higher than you want so you actually get the flow you're after (as in go for 2.5" if you want a 2.25" exhaust).

Any universal muffler will do, people love Redback and some love Lukey, I myself have a Berklee on my V6 and it sounds fine. I had a Lukey on my 1st gen and they look identical. If you want less blert I'd recommend either getting a smaller straight through as a mid-muffler (like a barrel muffler) or a resonator.. The muffler will be a lot quieter than a resonator so it really depends on what you want! Unfortunately all 4cyls will sound "ricey" because the fact is, rice = import = 4cyl (or rotor and some straight 6's blah blah). Rice to me is what my cannon sounded like on my V6, you didn't even know it was a 6 until you hit 3/4 grand (RPM), that real, wet-fart blurt noise, it irritates me just thinking of it.

BUT if you want that.. go for it.. just make sure you tell them exactly what your after that way if it sounds like turd you can take it back and tell them to fix it pronto!

just get a monster canon 5 inches or more and weld it on to the stock system its cheap and would make it sound loud.

...lol

I also have an astron fellow 4cylinderer! I went to the local exhaust shop and asked for a legal sports muffler. they put a semi-straight through type on mine, and I couldn't love it more! Sure, it doesn't increase performance, but hey, it sounds great and it's not like you're going to get huge gains from a 4cyl anyway! lol. I'll post up sound clips when I get my car back from dads mate.

lol A 2.6L engine isn't exactly what you'd call small dude :P

I have a straight through Mercury muffler on mine... sounds good, nice bark but shuts up when you want it to.

The gas will flow around the outside edge of the pipe anyway so press bent to mandrel bent will probably not flow that much different.

Sounds like the 4cyl division has the exhaust department all sewn up!!

First it depends on what you plan to do with the car and what your budget is.

If you're on a budget just look at replacing the restrictive rear end muffler with a straight through, or maybe even a cannon which is less. And then maybe extractors if you want to help the engine breath better and make it sound a little deeper.

That's if you're on a budget and want to go sound and go a bit better, you don't have to upgrade the piping or anything else in this case.

Nick's post pretty much sums the technical stuff about what size piping you should go with if you really wonna get stuck into mods later on, something like 2.5 inch press or 2.25 mandrel (which end up about the same size at the bends) will do nicely.

Unless you're gonna do major work to your motor, 2.25" piping is plenty, even if it has press bends.

2.5" will just cost more and drone more, and maybe even create backpressure down low for a loss of torque, due to exhaust gas velocity being too slow.

Don't make your exhaust too loud, to be blunt there's no way to make your motor sound particularly good (except maybe with high CR and big cams).

IMO choose your piping and mufflers so you get a little bit of a deep growl, but no more, or it will sound like a milo canned-excel.

If want a bit more power, the main gains are gonna be in a properly designed extractor, and a free-flowing rear muffler, unless the astrons come with absurdly small piping.

Or an engine transplant haha.

Poor 4cyl's.. Perhaps a 4G63 transplant will have it sounding better??

Don't be disheartened by the struggle for power, they do use astrons in pro drags remember.. albeit a few hundred grands worth of R&D, turbo's and the like, but hey - they're doin' it!
