hi my TJ magna vr-x is a dam auto. and its at 105.000k's and it feels like the gears are starting to slip. it revs in between the change and like jumps in to the gear. its not really bad but it is something. is there anything i can do to stop or fix this apart from burning the dan thing.:bowrofl: but if you can help in anyway it would be grate. thank you:D :D :D it makes me cry:cry:

I'm having same issues with my TH, I flushed the fluid, put a new filter on and reset the ECU yesterday, no change unfortunately. Hoping I dont have to replace it.

Similar thing in mine felix, im sending mine down to be flushed out and replaced. Im pretty sure thats the problem. Although mine does it mostly when i change from Reverse to Drive, and no i dont accelerate straight away. I make sure im fully stopped and when i change into Drive it still sometimes revs before dropping.

have it flushed and the fluid replaced with the right stuff (Mitsu Diamond SP-III or equivalent) and it should get significantly better. if it doesn't, then you might have a *real* problem with the tranny and should have it looked at.

if you take to someone other than a Mitsu dealer, make sure you request the right fluid. the magna tranny's don't like the wrong stuff at all!!!

cheers,

I may have a fix. This is gunna sound really weird but it worked on mine.

I was getting a little flaring on the 2-3 shift and some of the changes were a bit harsh. By pure chance I read an article on Autospeed.com.au where they took their magna in to a transmission specialist to have shift issues looked at. The article took you through the flush process and how it was done. Then it said that apart from resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery that there was a well known trick in the transmission trade to help Magna trannies relearn and shift better. After you hook up the power again, start the car and then cycle the shift lever through NDNRN cycle. The instructions said to do this a minimum of 5 times. I tried it on mine and bingo, no more shift issues. Strange but true.

I had simliar issues with my Sports. i have posted that learning process a few times now...search should help you there. But like the others said. Have it properly flushed. I had it 'flushed' at one place and the tranny fluid did not look clean enough. next time i had it done it was nice and red and still is. the car needs to run while the tranny fluid is being put in and pumped out. Also when i did the earthing kit i added a cable to the top of the gearbox. I have not had a 2nd to 3rd gear slip since doing both of these and that includes at the drags.
here it is same process for the 5 speeds

You may find it hard to believe, but some people do actually know what they are doing with cars..... As Schnell said, I did the Tranny ECU reset trick, where you shift between all gears five times. And yes I used Genuine mitsu SP3 fluid, all 20litres of it($27.00 a bottle, why not).

:nutkick:

Taking it to mitsu to have it looked at, anyone recommend a dealership in Melb who have a good service dept?

anyone used a tranny cooler on a 3rd gen?

They kinda do already from what I could see, it uses part of your radiator to run the fluid through.

I'm considering fitting an aftermarket one though, very easy to fit by the looks of it. there is two pipes that come out of the tranny, hoses then connect it to the radiator, all you'd need to do is buy enough hose and a cooler, then workout where to mount it.

This is the recommended unit for 3rd gens, from davies craig HERE (http://www.daviescraig.com.au/main/trans_coolers.asp?prodid=5)

I have one that came with the Sprintex kit.

I was talking to a member at MM07 and he picked up a second hand one and installed it himself. apparently there were mounting points for one in his TL. I would assume they are there in most (if not all) 3rd gens.

with regards to the amount of fluid, it should be about 8.5 litres to fill the tranny. I hope you didn't put in 20L

yep yep i added one of those too. Adding one of these in my opinion is a must..esp if the tippy mode is used a bit

hehe nah man, used 20ltrs all up to flush etc, dry it will take 8.5. But when you dump it, it only uses bout 5-6ltrs.
