View Full Version : TL Fuel Gauge Woes
I dumped $30 worth of fuel into a definitely empty Magna yesterday. My Fuel gauge didn't move (it actually went backwards!). I drove home and read all the documentation that I have with the car, and moved on. This morning, I filled the car up, low and behold, the Fuel gauge reads full, but when I get the car home (not 5 Kms of normal driving), I'm down to half a tank. Here we go again.
What's wrong with my car? I can't drive it until I have a working Fuel gauge on my Dash Board. What should I look at to fix the problem?
Also...
When I start the car, it revs up, and subsequently dies in the ass. I start the car again, and all is fine. My Battery is dying, and starting it twice every time I want the car to go anywhere is annoying me too.
Thanks for your help.
Edit: Forgot to add, the car is a TL VR-X Special Edition.

Battery,
Based on the age of your car it will be the battery gently dying.
Had exactly the same issues last year.
Start, revs flare then engine stops. Second time usually OK.
New battery about a year ago, no problems since.
Don't forget that time in high australian temperatures kills a battery very fast.
I had a Falcon several years ago and the battery basically exploded on a hot day!!

Thanks guys. Credit Card is armed and ready.

I would wait at least 30 minutes after driving to try this... or undo the bolts holding the unit in before you take the hose off. I had to clean up petrol for AGES because the fuel tank was still pressurised when I took the hose off!!

Can't wait for this, as i know mine has to be nearly gone, still original @ 72k kms/5 years old.
Also to the OP.
Sounds like you got the double whammy happening, battery dieing and fuel sender is gone. 2 of the more common problems that happen around this time.

m4ddog... it must be close... mum's went at 75k and mine went at 82k
wook... the trick is to run the car so it uses the fuel in the line. just undoing the bolts only releases the pressure in the tank, not in the fuel line after the pump :)

yeah, but I don't want to run my car to empty the fuel line... something about forced induction and leaning out.
and there wasn't any fuel (or very little) coming back down the line... it was all coming out of the pump.
Heh, Mine's only got 47,000 on it.
Its more of a second car, as I have a company car.
If I released the fuel pressure at the at the sender unit, will that have released the presure at the fuel filter. So I can change the fuel filter at the same time??
