View Full Version : Fuel gauge prob
Hi all, I got some striffe with my fuel gauge on the TJ. When I fill the tank up the gauge reads full and the trip computer says 550km to empty, no problem there. The problem is that the fuel gauge falls faster than the trip computer e.g. gauge says half, trip says 450km to go, gauge says empty trip says 250km to go. I belive its the gauge thats wrong because when I cross check the trip with the odometer it's right.
Anyone else had the same problem?? possible cause or remidy would help .

My fuel gauge is about as useless as a chicken with D cups. Sometimes it drops really fast, I once thought I only had quater of a tank but could only fit $15 in it. I have a recipt to say mine was replaced under warranty but it's still useless. I beleive it's common for them to screw up

This has happened to me before but it doesn't happen all the time. mitsubishi servicing tells me it's unlikely to be problem with the fuel gauge.

It is a fuel sender issue. $70 part from Mitsubishi + one hours mechanic labour, or DIY. Instructions here...

Disciple, thankyou for your contribution to my thread. I actualy had a quick look at the thread referring to the fuel sender, only to ask myself "what the hell is a fuel sender". Maybe I'm one in a thousand people who did'nt know this, I'm sorry for being so naive about my automotive knowledge. Now that I know what a fuel sender is, I'm on the right path to have it fixed.
Thank you to the other members for your imput.

I came on this morning to check about this exact problem. Driving around this morning with the fuel light on, the trip computer shows only 50L used, hence about 20L left.
The gauge is really weird, sometimes it will go down about 20% in just a short drive. Why is it so bloody inaccurate? As you said fuel sender, but doesn't the trip comp use that as well?
