Howdy all, just need a bit of help here.
Wondering if I can install a complete sunroof from a 1999 Verada Xi.
The dimensions seem to fit but the whole sunroof including railing and motor etc. take up nearly the whole roof.
Would this be possible or no go?
The whole sunroof including rails etc. measures
96cm x 112cm
and the glass is
88cm x 48cm

If the internal panel fits there should not be an issue, you will need to be wary of the curve of the outside lid (may be different as the third gen had a little more curve) as well and if the roof was an after market or factory unit, generally factory units have the roof skin pressed in the factory so there is no lip at the seal where as the aftermarket units have a frame that holds the roof skin.
Other than this the install is not all that hard, roof lining needs to drop, this is usually stuck to soft foam and then to the base of the roof tray.
You will need to run your drain pipes and make sure there are no kinks in them

Thanks mal!
As long as the whole sunroof manages to fit under the roof with space left it'll be possible, right?

have you looked into the structure of your roof
is there any difference in load bearing struts in a SUNROOFED car compared to a car without a SUNROOF, like yours
you dont want to install the kit to find that your roof load cannot hold it up without bowing the roof/body over time
also its most likely you will have different fixing points that arent compaitable to your roof space.
might be safe to check with an engineer first

Mate I'd be extremely concerned if the car's roof began to bow with the weight of the sunroof... I've seen magnas at the wreckers with other magnas on top of them and still no bowing.
Dimi, I thought your car already had a sunroof?

LOL not a single bow hey? just crushed to oblivion
i wasnt implying that the roof will cave in and crush him. lol
i was concerned about the sun roof machine pullin the roof panel down.
putting a weird off putting dent/bow in it.
im sure if you go and stand on your roof. you will hear a lovely BOINK and ur roof will bash in

Hey luci na i was going to purchase a hollandia 700 sunroof but that cost $2250 installed.
I almost came to purchasing it but then luckily thought to myself wtf not worth it that was way too much...
Yeah hopefully the roof won't cave in i laugh if it did
Actually I wouldn't laugh but I doubt that would happen?

there's places that fit sunroofs to cars aftermarket man. they'll do it any car, so I doubt there'l be bowing.
dimi: it'd probably be easier to bring it to one of those places with your car and get them to do it. they'll seal it up properly etc. dad had an aftermarket sunroof in his XR6 a while back. it started leaking:doubt: . basically, if you get a workshop to do it, you get a warranty with it. if it leaks because of something they did, they'll replace it for ya.

yeah i was thinking about this today.. you are the biggest noob binzer. They put sunroofs in pretty much any car without engineers certificates. I don't think I will ever understand your logic man, maybe all that exhaust water you are drinking is screwing you up a tad :bowrofl:
dimi, that wouldn't happen to be that whole sunroof conversion I saw on ebay would it??
If so, good score! And yeah, who is cutting the hole?

hahaha chuck leave the sunroof alone lol
try shatter my dreams and shiet
i was thinking of taking it to a smash repairs to have it installed no?
cos if i take it to a sunroof place they'll probably spin all this bs to me about how "we gotta do this and that and put a whole new half cut onto your car" and end up charging me $2000 to install it... hmmm
btw thanks for the help guys

How about on a 3rd gen iv been looking at this for a few weeks, but Im not sure if anyone has ever installed an ex factory one before.
Does anyone have any idea if it's practical. Or any idea on installation costs.
I've heard factory roofs sometimes use special machinery at the plant to install them?
Has anyone ever looked at their stock mechanism and how it mounts? mines a 98 advance.
I've been chatting with the guy and he isnt too sure on cost. Oh and it's 9 hours away from me. :(

practicality, its a pain in the bum when the shade thing isn't pulled forward to block out the sun, as it shines directly into your eyes. if you've got black seats, don't do it, they'll fade to grey. not to mention, most people hardly use them.
all observations made from an AU II SR Falcon and an XR6 Turbo my dad owned.

like madmanga said factory roofs sit in lip in the roof, to install a factory one u need a machine to roll the lip. most sunroof places wont have it cause they dont need one when installing an aftermarket roof.
a lot of the cost of a sunroof is in the installation. they actually remould the rooflining cause sometimes the room between the lining and roof isn't enough for the sun roof to slide into.

This one comes with rooflining so shouldnt be a problem there, the only problems i see are rolling the lip, cutting the hole and mounting the sucker in there.
What lip has to be rolled? is this the front edge of the hole?
Im assuming with the mounts it justs bolts in? Anyone know if all 3rd gens have these holes?
So many questions so little time - Hmmm
It is working, the rada was in a rear end, hence the removal.

nar it goes right round the hole, it makes like a cavity in the roof and the sunroof sits in it and seals it when its closed.

i know a place that does do sunroofs and does the "factory" appearance look p.o.a when installing roofs
thing he told me is when they do the rolled roofs they have to repaint the roof... then the cost of installation...WOW a $2k aftermarket roof will work out the same in the end...

yep a lot of the cost is in the installation the cheapest option is to get a wreck that has an aftermarket roof.

I have done a factory foof fitment into an RX& years ago, we changed the whole roof skin which in itself does sound big but aside from time is very easy.
If factory, you will not be able to roll a lip, some may weld a section in but you will end up with a roof full of bog.
There is a Verada in the wreckers in Pick Pay and Go with the aftermarket roof (whole car is $1500 from memory and is in reasonable condition black one), mine also had one fitted in my KR to fitting the roof in it. There is ample space for the roof and there are not structural issues, just the curve of the lid and if it was factory or aftermarket.

Maybe also ask some panel beaters?
Madmagna

Certainly did, mine had the glass lid with the panel inside which slides into the roof. Had 2 options, rear pop up or entire unit droped down and went into the roof
dimi108
25-09-2007, 06:32 AM
yeah i'll ask some panel beaters for a quote
hopefully can get it installed for under $600... we'll see
mal was that a self install or factory option?

Mate, not sure really, mine was apparently one of the first XI's to be sold.
It had some very strange features such as the ECS as well as SRS sensors but no airbags? Had options listed such as the sunroof in the dealer book and was a factory roof (had rolled lip on roof) although in the Mitsu range, this was not an option on OZ until 1996 KE's?? One mits dealer told me that the first few XI's may have come from Japan as base cars for the execs, not sure if this was true in any way.
When mine was build, the XI verada's had not been released (was a sept 1991), the EI did not even have elec windows yet in Oz!

Hi every one I am new to your forum but I couldn,t help myself when I saw all the misinformation regarding sunroofs . I have had over 30 years experience in installing and servicing virtually every type of sunroof that has ever been fitted to cars whether it be aftermatket or factory . Just a couple of bits of info there are two ways of fitting aftermarket roofs 1/ with a bezel finish which is a small black strip that finishes off the edge of the sunroof opening at the edge of the hole , if you have seen any Falcon or Commodore which has a sunroof fitted over the last 6 years , that is the way Ford and GM have done it . 2/ Rolled edge finish this is as close to a genuine factory look you can get . It is a process where the roof hole is cut smaller than the actual finished size as the extra metal is then rolled down into the opening using very precise flanging jigs , this process requires a full roof repaint !! .
Now if you buy an "Ebay " roof or other it will be more of a pain than you think . first you would need an exact template so the hole size is right , plus all the fitting hardware support brackets drain tubes and wiring etc. I have dealt with two clients over the last few weeks who bought roofs of sorts from "Ebay" and got stuck with lemons that could not be reused . As for structural strength most modern cars have cross roof braces inside Magnas have one running from front to rear and side to side . When our integrated sunroof is fitted it has been designed to replace the side impact strength that the original roof has . When it is fitted 4 braces are fitted to support the sunroof in the car and maintain strength . Thanks for letting me use your forum to help with your chit chat . Regards Howard . PS I wont put my business details up as I don,t know what your forum policy is on putting business names and website details up . Someone may enlighten me and we can then let you know .

Interesting read there, are you suggesting that eBay sunroofs are a no-go? And that conventional aftermarket sunroofs cannot be fitted without compromising structural integrity? I'm interested to find out, as I wouldn't mind a sunroof on my TR.

HOward is 100% onlt that 2nd Gens do not have the brace from front to rear.
If you are able to get the correct afermarket kit for that car you are fine so long as the installer knows what the are doing.
It is rare to have an aftermarket rolled edge, most have the black strip.
Again, is the Verad roof you hve a factory with rolled edge or after market with sealing strip?
