even just the player it self would be good, cause the i would just get a screen from ebay or some where

Your looking to spend over 1000 if you want Alpine. And 500 might get you a DVD with Ipod, but i don't like this odds, just go to a few Car Audio places and see what they have.
You could get all those features in one unit from ebay but you are running the risk of buying crap that will breakdown after 6 months of use.
Trying looking at buying second hand if all else fails

You won't get ipod feature and dvd and screen under $500.
You can get something like a sanyo dvd player for $3-350, and then get a screen off ebay for around $150, this will be the only way you'll get a dvd player plus screen under $500.

i have a JVC dvd hu for my car
its a JVC DV7205
http://www.ryda.com.au/JVC-KD-DV7205-DVD-Tuner-p/kddv7205.htm
i got it second hand (only 2 months old) from CAA for $250 (retails at JB for $400-$500)and then went and purchased a 7" motorised screen for $300 and its working out pretty good. the HU has all the features i need.
if you want an alpine DVD player with i-pod ready think you would be dreaming to find one for under $500
you get what you pay for so try spending a little get something of better quality.
its also good to make sure the HU and screen are two different units as it will work out better if one of the two dies on you.
my advise
log on to CAA and look on there. heaps of good quality gear for good cheap prices.

along the lines of what ash said, search ebay for JVC gear, u could make a 2din combo for around $600 (screen and player seperate units), or go up to say $900 for the JVC all in ones.
that would offer the best bang for buck on the cheap
