Ive got an odd problem here,
I got the timing belt changed on my KJ about a week ago, now when I turn the car on when its cold I get a horrible sound from the engine, it sounds like someone has a bucket of bolts and is shaking it. If I turn the car off after half a second and start it again then the sound is gone....
Any ideas as I dont have cash to fix it as I just bought the car? Anything I can check myself before I take it to get looked at? I have a fair knowledge of the belts etc so anywhere I should check first?
Apart from this the car runs fine.

could be a problem with a tensioner as well.

I say tensioner has come loose.....or he left a bolt loose behind the timing cover and has worked loose and is now rattling around the crank pulley....??? Get it looked at asap!

i just remembered that after i got my major service done they said i had an exhaust leak. and i said well it wasn't there when it came in this morning.
anyway i got home and they hadn't connected the EGR pipe back up at the back of the motor.
If noise wasn't there before the belt change, I would be going back to place where they have changed it and politely ask them why there is noise and what makes it. If necessary I would leave the car there to cool down so they can hear it when cold.

i had this problem with my TJ. Also had alternator pulley loose amongst other bolts. Check them all.

I got it changed by a member on here, and his dad who is a local mechanic here helped out to get the timing spot on.
Id feel kinda rude in a way going back asking for warranty on something done as a favour.
I guess I will check all the bolts/covers/tensioner etc and see of anything is obvious.

Hmmmm, I had a look under the car last night whilst it was jacked up to change tyres/springs
Right beside the tensioner there is a bracket with 2 14mm bolts that connects the alternator/aircon/whatever pulley to the engine, these bolts were not in fully, so I tightened them.
So far, 2 starts from VERY cold (one when car had not been started for 48 hours, other when car had been sitting outside all night) and both times the sound has not been there.
Fungers crossed it stays like this.
Stay tuned :)
