I got a TJ sII with 110km.
i think wat i'm hearing is the tappets starting to get noisy :doubt:
i just changed the oil with synth S 10w-40 and i think it got a bit louder.
sometimes it idles a bit strange with a bit shaking and it feel like its about to stall.

What u guys think it would be? Tappets? MOST IMPORTANT HOW MUCH TO FIX

Just live with it - you'll NEVER fix it

some V6's are worse than others, you can try replacing the lifters if you want at $50 a pop (remember there is 24 of 'em), but sooner or later it will return - if it makes any improvment at all........i went through this with my Mitsu Dealer, they removed and tested and replaced the lifters under warranty, and sure enough, a few months later it was back.....

people here recommend Nulon worn engine treatment - supposedly cuts the noise level right down......havnt tried it personally so I cant verify its performance long term.....

My KJ sounds a bit like a diesel, yet our Ralliart hardly has any noise at all.....just the luck of the draw im afraid....

What weight was the oil you replaced? If you've moved to a thinner oil, there'll definetely be a bit of valvetrain rattle.

Tappets won't cause your engine to idle roughly, unless they're utterly thrashed.

thanks boys but yer the noise is pretty frustrating. Can you simply adjust the tappets or are they hydrolic?

what was the engine oil that u were using previously... i had the same problem.... i would personally suggesting you put back the original oil... anyway currently having a 10w-30 in it now still ticks like the 10W-40... i got the car 3 months ago and it was serviced at mitsu, but when i dropped the oil and do it myself it became noisy... the thing was that it was having 15w-50 oil all along... i called up the mitsu service centre with the help of the log book and they told me that they are using the CHEAPO Shell plus.... the one everyone can get at supercheap at a ridiculously $27... but then again... when one of my mate serviced his TH there the problem was solved... no ticking again... i have yet to try out myself if the 15W-50 oil would help... but if it does... can u let me know?? hahaa... i have still yet to convince myself that my TL with 68Ks on the clock needs an engine oil with the weight 50... then when it hits 150ks would it need 60??

Your problem might be fixed if you can find the right oil.

This site may give you a few ideas:

I would have thought 50w oil was way to think for an engine with only 68k

I had a lifter noise on my old 3.0 motor, anything I tried didn't make it go away, in the end I got fed up and changed all 24 lifter, and at $17 per lifter thats just under $408...

The funny part is I only used that motor for another year before I transplanted the 3.5 in, so now I have a 3.0 sitting at home with brand new lifters and timing belt. lol

At least when I did change the lifters the problem was gone. :D

I have a mate that also works at Mitsu Service and he also uses that shell oil, mainly cos it helps reduce the rattle...i supply my oil but use a 15w50 semi synthetic

Just bear in mind though those $17 lifters wont be genuine ones, so if they fail your not covered by Mitsu.......

I have been told a thicker oil will help also, but im of the same opinion, why should a relativly new car require a thicker oil.........

What brand was the product? More details, i'm gonna use it!
its only a temporary solution though?

BTW 10w-40 synth S is recommended in a TJ
the part that is amazing my dad has a TE with 200km and i service that for him and there is not a single noise from the engine (knock on wood 3 times ) lol

I'm not convinced this is a good idea, apparently too thick an oil does alot of harm to your motor, as it can have trouble flowing into all gaps it needs to go, due to being too thick for your bearing tolerances etc.

The manual recomends 10-w30 or 10-w40.

I'm using a fully synthetic 10-w30, havn't noticed any noise @104,000km.

not convinced??????not sure why you need a 10w oil which states in the manual for sub -20degrees starting situations would need to be used over an oil which is also recommended in the manual for -15 degrees starting temps. fair enough if you live at the snow. The manual also states that 10w30 is suitable only up to 40 degree ambient temperatures, so i would not use that in s.e Qld. 40w and 50w would both be good in higher outside temps. 15w50 is not to thick and will do well under high temps

this may sound stupid but my tappets got noisy as at one stage, all it took was a bottle of engine cleaner stuff and had it sittin at 3000rpm for bout half an hour and dumped the oil and it made a world of difference. 110k is a long time for carbon and other stuff to build up

It's NEO platinum (full synthetic). Rarely heard of here outside of motorsport circles, as it's made in the U.S and only imported by one distributor here, AFAIK.

It's good if you like to hit the track, as it can cope with extreme heat cycles much better than your average stuff. Especially if like me you don have an aftermarket oil cooler, where oil temp can get up to 120-130 deg c. Apparently your average oil brakes down very quickly if it gets near those kind of temps.

Fair enough. I'm in Sydney, ambient temps tend to be considerable lower.

Sports also mentioned the same as Chisholm, the thicker oil won't get into the big end bearings, especially at high rpm. Stop being experts and put in the oil it was designed to use.
