I'm new to this forum as I just bought a 10/04 TW AWD VR-X in Platinum.
Bought it at Auction, it was Ex-NSW Police. had 44,000kms on it and I paid $15800 for it, which I thought was a pretty good deal.
Are there any things I should check/service immediately after buying it? I know I could just take it to Mitsu and get it serviced - but if any items were on he service guide to be replaced at say 60000kms, say the trans case or diff oil should be replaced at 60,000kms I'd inclined to change it myself now as the car may have had a bit of a hard life.
I'll post pics in the next couple of days as I only picked it up this monring :)

Thats a good buy. my mate picked up a TL VR with k's like that for 13500def do the tranny fluid. if unsure to do it yourself, get mits to do it. It is a very worthwhile idea. Mitsu will flush it properly. This is something i will probably have done probably every 30000...no 60000. Maybe add an external cooler too.
Welcome to the forums:D
Woohoo, another AWD owner.
Anway, its due for a service at 45000km anyway. Service interval is 15000kms.
Good score psycho, yeah get it fully serviced, have a good look at the brakes while you are at it; then give it a hard time- go and find some roundabouts!

Does TW VRX not have a cooler for the AUTO transmission fluid?
What about the 380's do they have? I recently fitted a cooler to my TJ (got one from wrecker ex a TS Magna). Thought it would be easy, but took me 3 days, believe it or not. If anyone wants to fit a cooler, first thing is check the diameter of the steel piping versus theh piping on the car. TJ has 5/16 inch steel piping and cooler on TS has 3/8 pipe. First I squeezed the smaller hose onto the cooler pipes, but after a day I ended up with a leak (hard to find).
Pirtek charged me $40 to weld suitable sized tails onto the cooler piping. I just want to make sure the transmission lasts as long as possible.

No 3rd gens come with separate cooler. The OEM cooler is part of the main radiator (the
bottom part of it). Don't know about 380's.

Thanks for all the support.
I've taken it out for a fair flogging over the last couple of days and it handles better than I had expected. To be honest the grip is amazing for a 1700kg car. I can see why the cops liked them so much.
I think i'll get it serviced by Mitsubishi and tell them to replace all the fluids.
Engine Oil
Transmission Fluid
Transfer Case
Rear Diff
Power Steering
Brake Fluid.
Anything else that anyone can think of?
The brakes look like they have had a hard time, already there is quite a big lip on the outside of the discs. I'll whip the wheels off on the weekend and measure it and work out if they can be machined or they need replacing - if they do I'll whack some slotted ones on there :)
Has anyone on here installed a towbar on a VRX? I'm looking at a hayman reese towhitch (1500/150kg) one and it looks like I'll have to cut a fair section of the back bumper out - do the factory ones fit any better?

I think the 45K km logbook service contains AWD maintenance. Mine did. Mine was an ex-hire car with 37k km. Got the trans service at mitsubishi straight away. Was a smart move, made a difference. I got a tow bar put on mine, but it was an Adelaide company bar (not hayman). Mine had a removable cap though that VRX's didn't.
Check if your back window seal is flakey. If so get it replaced under warranty. They were faulty (mainly on TJ's). Great cars, I love mine

well done champ my kl awd had 40000 odd kms when i got it first thing it needed was a tranny service only drama i had with mine is tailshaft was replaced due to some d*****d puttin a block of cement or somethin like that on the road at night didnt see it!!! how does ur trans shift pretty smooth? mine seems to "flare" a bit between 1/2/3 when pushed hard from standing.
anyways youll love the handling i do!!!

Posted this today in another thread. Basically it is what we do each time when my son buys "new" second hand car.
It is always good practice after buying second hand car to change oil and filter, coolant, spark plugs, brake fluid. Check air filter, brake pads and discs, check electrolyte level in the battery (if low fill with distilled water only), check power steering fluid level. Depending on mileage, change gearbox oil/fluid.
If around 100K mark and you don't have written proof change timing belt, as well as fuel filter.
I would also put tyres and shock absorbers high on my "To do" list.
If your car is still under warranty wait with DIY until warranty expire.

good choice on car!
excellent price too from what i can gather about the costs of these ones.
you will love these babies - very confidence inspiring cars.
(nothing better than flying through a roundabout at the speed limit of course, with some punk in his (or hers) vl commo with a stunned look on this face resembling "its a magna... why arnt i beating a magna?!" lol good times to be had with awd for sure :) )

I've got a verada and the bumper does not have the towbar cut as well. However, the
installers cut out a section and covered it with rubber edging. See here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32261&highlight=tow) for info.

Just went to Mitsubishi to get quotes on few things. They want $545 for the 45k service? Is this right?
Also a 1500kg towbar installed was $570, which I spose is alright. I was also going to pick up a set of genuine VR-X floor mats for $125.

No. $545 for a 45K service is a bit too much. Should be in the high $300 to low $400. Also,
don't go to mitsu for a tow bar. They'll just put their markup on it as they get other people
to do it. Just like tyres and wheels etc. Go to a reputable towbar place. Mine was just over
the $300 mark for a 1600kg heavy duty square hitch with the power adapter in the boot
setup.

I thought it might have been a bit steep. Ok they are changing almost every fluid in the car, but that shouldn't take all that long....
The local towbar place was quoting me about the same money as Mitsu for a hayman reese one. I'll keep looking around.

I bought mine for $17,000 - ex QLD Police TW VRW AWD with 52,000km's! You got a good deal and a bloody good car. Mine has the extra "B31" option for the heavy duty brake pads - it wil be stamped on the plate. I reckon you will have it to.

Mine doesn't have the B31 option, but it came with Bendix Ultimates installed. Nice and dusty
I just bought some DBA Slotted front rotors - got them from Repco, I was quoted $150 a rotor for the DBA417SL/SR combo. Paid them in full before they got them in - which I am very glad as when they came in they were the DBA 4000 Series 6X6 wiper rotors. Apparently DBA has superceded the DBA417 to DBA4417SL/SR. As I had paid in full they had to give them to me for the original price - $300 the pair. I'm Cheering :)

What is the difference in brake feel like compared with std rotors vs slotted?
psychofox
24-10-2007, 07:00 AM
Just picked them up yesterday afternoon, will install them on the weekend.
Rotors don't really change the 'feel' of brakes, the biggest influences on brake feel are brake fluid and pads. As I'll be changing the pads and fluid at the same time, I won't really be able give an apples to apples comparison.
Where the rotors will come into their own is heavy repeated braking - why I bought slotted ones is that i have to tow a racecar, roughly 1400kg tow load and I've got to go up and down some big hills, I thought the extra cooling would be beneficial.

Put the new rotors and pads on this weekend, easy install, only took a bit over an hour to do. The old rotors were stuffed, 21.9mm measured with a min thick of 22.4mm....not good. Sorry about the quality, crappy phone camera.
old rotors:

Gave the pads and rotors a nice good bedding in around our local hills and they feel quite good.
