View Full Version : Acceleration/stalling issues in '93 v6 auto TR... advice?

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the car suddenly seemed to be hesitant and lacked power. Instead of accelerating smoothly when I put my foot down, the car would gather speed gradually and there seems to be a bit of a shuddering sensation. My first though was a transmission problem, but after a bit of experimentation I determined that it seems to happen during acceleration in pretty much any gear, regardless of whether I leave the car in drive or use the gears. It is most noticeable once the engine is warm.

Since the car is due for an oil change and a transmission service I've been working up to getting those done. However today the car began stalling badly: first time a few mins from home when I slowed to enter a driveway, and then about another dozen times in the five minutes it took me to get back home again. It seems to happen chiefly when the car slows to a stop (e.g. traffic lights, parking), but at least once it stalled a little after takeoff when I must have been doing about 25km/h.

Having had a word with dad and a look through the repair manual, we're thinking that it's most likely that both problems are related to the fuel system. I stuck a bottle of Wynn's in the tank a couple of weeks ago when the issues first surfaced, and that didn't seem to help.

Before I cart it off to the local dealer and get them to take a look, does anyone have any insight or advice about what the source of the problem might be? I'd like to go in there with as much information as possible (or better yet fix this myself) to keep the costs down.

Cheers!

My mum's car had the same problem over the last 2 months.

Possible prob's:
- faulty spark plug &/or spark lead;
- bugged injector;
- bugged distributor &/or rotar;
- inconsistent fuel supply because of other reasons not related to above.

Suggested sol'n:
1. Get car serviced (including new sparkies, on board injector clean (circa $75-100 & new fuel filter).
2. If its still stalling, get new dizzy & rotar (circa $140 for both - not each)
3. " " " ", get new spark leads.
4. " " " ", get an off-board injector clean (circa $400).

When completed, make sure you run the car on premium unleaded every fourth tank & rev it out to the redline hlafway through the tank. It has the same effect as using a bottle of injector cleaner (but with some increased power).

Replace Fuel Filter.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I took the car in for the service expecting to have to shell out for all kinds of replacements, but it turns out there was a vaccum leak. They fixed this and a service (replaced the spark plugs, oil change etc) and the car is now running fine.

They recommended replaceing the fuel filer as well ("to rule it out") but since the car is going OK I'll do that myself when I get time.
