gooooood morning!
how are we all this wonderful friday morning?

yesturday arvo when came home from being out and about and whatnot, we parked the car where we always park it, locked it and left it until about half and hour ago (7.30am).

went out to the car, unlocked jumped in and started it ready to take the other half to work.

when i parked the car, the climate control was set at around 23degrees with the ac on.
thismorning when i got in the car, i turned the temp round to about 26 and turned the ac off - but left the fan speed at auto - as i always do.

in the time of starting and turning off the ac, the engine starts to make a rather loud high pitched whine - halfway similar to the sound of a thermo fan, but without the huge quantity of air movement sound.

when the sound started, i haddnt yet touch the climate control temp & a/c.
made my changes and the car was still making the noise and i guess you could say i realised that it didnt sound right, and said to the other half "is that me?" reply was yes, so popped the bonnet, but in the time it took him to actually find the release catch and open the bonnet the whinning sort of sound had stopped.

from start to finish - the sound lasted around about 1min i guess.

when we got the bonnet open but the sound had stopped, we shut the engine down.
we all know how cars turn off - the rada today was not like a normal car, it had a bit of 'run on' lasted 1 or 2 seconds.
during this run on time, the top end sounded very rattly/loose.

the most noise from run on seems to be coming from the rear bank - the bank of pistons/head at the side closest to the firewall - very little from the front bank.

The coolant system seemed to be instantly pressurised as well. in that 1min period when we first started the car and shut it down, started opening things to check fluids etc "just in case" and when we removed the radiator cap, the coolant was... "excited to see us". didnt explode or anything, it surged out - not a huge surge, but still.

The verada only has 55,xxxkm's on the clock, and has full service history as it was a former mitsu company car for the accountant.

the other half seems to think that the timing belt might have let go/be letting go on us? as far as the receipts go that came with the car, that hasnt been changed.

phoned mitsu service dept to see when i can get it into them - Tuesday 9th of OCTOBER, yes thats right 2WEEKS away.

the verada has never made any of these noises / had these symptoms before.
(if it was an old x series ford, itl have been fixed by now by me lol)

i use BP Premium - 95 Octane fuel in her, i refuse to run my car on an ethanol blended fuel - as i have seen a TR Maggy have a motor **** itself due to stupid E10 fuels.
the sump has the correct amount of oil in it too.

sidenote:
we started the rada after we shut it down - to see if the whine noise came back, but it didnt. the run-on feeling was there tho when we shut the car down.

not sure if its safe to drive the car - dont want to break it anymore than it allready is.
by the sounds of the phonecall, it should get covered under warrenty.

help?
ideas?
suggestions?
please!

cheers

just had the racq guy out to have a look/listen - waste of time really.
not his fault or anything - but to start with, i didnt wanna pay to have the racq come look at it coz they wont do anything coz its such a 'new' car.

his opinion is that the car is ok to drive at the moment, but drive nice and get mitsu to look themselves ASAP for piece of mind (wonder how much that will cost me :S)

trying to pull strings at mitsu now to get it looked at today - instead of in 2weeks...

the airbox makes a nice throaty roar as it draws air in too - almost sounds similar to a Pod filter.
Afaik, its still got a standard mitsu air filter in the box!

Sure it's nothing too major. All cars can have the occasional glitch regardless of reputation.(my mate's brand new BMW 120i has been back to BMW 6 times for various faults!!!)

My 2000 Magna has had the occasional minor fault, but has never not been able to be driven....hasn't left me stranded yet!!!

im just a lil paranoid i guess you could say.
i traded in a lemon of a car for this one, hoping that i would get a car that i wont have to worry about :)

the amount of times i had my 2006 hyundai elantra back at the dealership for warrenty work is not funny - i was known by name, walking into the service dept sent the counter staff running and hiding from me. the service dept manager was scared of me - no joke. i had the motor replaced TWICE in that car under warrenty and they still never managed to fi the problem. but the elantra is gone - the rada is a QUALITY is 1million times better - i hope :D

so i guess i am paranoid about getting another lemon.

They are bringing in laws to prevent that ;)

they do it now after i had gone through all that!?

oh wells - i have gotten rid of the car now, so its not my problem anymore!
(unfort, someone who does buy my old car, will cop the problems - but its still got 4years of warrenty remaining for them...)

drove the verada thisafternoon, it drives fine and doesnt seem to have any problems afterall.
it doesnt make the noises it was making thismorning, and wasnt 'running on' after shutdown.
so its a slight possibility that i over-reacted..

i will never buy another hyundai - EVER
even if they do bring out this v8 RWD coupe they are supossedly talking about.

like, the paint is very thin, the metal that is spose to help protect you in the event of a crash - is very thin
interior fit and finish, i must say is quite good - no squeaks and rattles really.
airconditioning is a joke - worked when it wanted to, it would turn itself off. (spoke to the service dept about this - they didnt want to know about it)
the standard head units are a joke as well - they are very well known to break!
the betta 2 (the 2L cvvt dohc motor they run in these things) was ok..
the cvvt only ever worked occasionally - again service dept told me it was a characteristic of the motor! (whihc i have on good authority that they are ment to work all the time...)
Even phoning Hyundai australia was a pointless excercise - i got told "you have a 5yr unlim warrenty, which is great for any car, and thats what its there for"
i had to point out, that i got 5years yes, but not the unlimited km warrenty, that came about for the newer uglyier elantra! and i translated his lil speach into "you have a warrenty, what are you complaining about just use it)

so with my one experience with my own hyundai - i will NEVER buy another one.'
(my parentals have had 2hyundais, and they have been good cars - i scored the lemon of the bunch id say)

Yeah, my grandma bought a 2003 Accent brand new and she hasn't had any trouble with it. Drives smooth, great on fuel, no troubles. Sure it's only got 35000k's on it, but still!

i brought my elantra new (with 50kms on the clock - where it was driven from the holding yard to the dealership prolly) and the problems started at 750km!
ran right thru until i got rid of it @ 32,000km!
i do feel sorry for anyone who buys my old car second hand... but unfort... its not my problem - and they do have the remainder of the new car warrenty to use.. at least thats something.

my elantra was a lil moody when it came to using fuel - sometimes it was fantastic, ran on the look of an oily rag, others it wanted to be hardlined to a fuel pump.
