Hey everyone,

I went car shopping with my mate today to get him a car. We ended up picking out a 91' TR Mitsubishi Magna 4spd Auto blue sedan 2.6litre with 180,000km on the clock.

It's been very well looked after, I'm amazed how smooth the engine runs on a car of this age. It certainly is a great buy. We paid $3,000 on the road with 12months warranty.

The only concern my mate had with it was the slight vibration while in drive and in stationary position. But I've read here previously that its quite normal for these cars so I told him dont be concerned about it.

The car shifts and accelerates smoothly and is really a nice car to drive, even better that it will have 4 cylinder economy.

The only issue im still not sure on is the auto shift lever. Its very lose when in drive. I'm guessing its just wear since it doesnt effect the drivablity of the car. Is there an easy fix for this?

Other than that this car is a great car.

It's also good to know that there is massive forum to support for the Magna.

BTW is there anything relating to maintance that these beasts are picky about?

Cheers - Dean

Hi There, welcome to AMC.

Sounds like a reasonable pickup, hope you enjoy it.

The shaking at idle is common for the TR 4cyl's. As is the Gear knob.

The only thing incorrect with your statement is the "4cyl fuel economy" lol. The 2.6 TR/TS has the highest fuel usage of any Magna AFAIK as the TR/TS is heavier than the TM/TN/TP, also being the auto model definitely wont help things. The 3.0L V6 models use less fuel as the engine doesnt need to work as hard.

But its only gonna be 1-2L/100km so dont stress about it :)

Hopefully lasts you a long time and gives you alot of trouble-free motoring.

a temp fix for the vibration is by upping the idle screw till you find a good balance

Oh well fuel economy wasn't the main reason for going for a magna. More was reliability. Have heard many stories of these things makes it past the 300,000 mark.

They're far more better looking than anything else you can get for that year in that price range.

Thanks for the tip Vistor1, i'll look into that.

Yeah u wont be disappointed. Over 300,000km is quite possible with a few tips:

* Use good quality oil and change engine oil and filter every 5,000km or close as possible to it
* Don't redline the engine or do burnouts (cv joints and boots can be costly and annoying!)
* Just maintain it.. replace things when required. Make sure cooling system hoses are in excellent condition at all times, as well as clamps, water pump and belts etc.

Timing chains are bad for rattling and are expensive to replace, but otherwise, they're a great car. My uncle has a 90 model tp 4 cylinder that has 410,000km on it now and its still going strong.

Dont over do it or the car use's even more fuel. It should be around the 800 in drive to run ok, if not could be a faulty ISC, a hose leak, TB clean etc

Plenty of search info on it.

Hows the transmission oil? Bright red? make sure its not a browny colour and the o/d still works.
