View Full Version : Installing 6x9" into 2nd Gen
Ok guys, I haven't actually made an attempt yet, but figured since I'm a total noob with this stuff, I'd ask for advice on how to install 6x9" speakers onto the parcel shelf of ma TR.
Basically what I want to know is,
1) When I cut the holes out, do I just cut the whole the exact size of the 6x9 opening in the framing underneath, or do i need to measure it out and cut a slightly smaller hole?
2) Wheres the best place to run the wires to get them back to the headunit?
3) Do I take the parcel shelf out to cut and whatever, and if so how?
I think thats it for now....thanks guys. Will be giving this a go probably this weekend, once I have the speakers.

6x9 will bolt straight in.
just gotta cut the material.
depends what sort of style speakers they are
mine i cut material a little bigger to bolt to the shelf it self and the covers cover up the rest.
take out yre back seats( easier to get wires through) and run wires under the trim all the way up to the front.

ok for starters it illegal to cut the metal part of the parcel shelf
but your allowed to cut the material
i would just get some spacers or make your own
Not cutting the metal part, thats already done like that from the factory.
When you say take the seats out and run the wires down the trim...where exactly? Like down the middle, under the carpet and under the centre up to the head unit? Or down the sides, under the scuff plates, around under the dash and into the centre?

do you have any speakers in the rear parcel shelf?
if so just reuse that wire
or if you dont run it down one side of the car to the headunit
Stock TR Exec, so atm only the 2 dash speakers, nothing in the rear, parcel shelf is flat and solid atm.
Dads idea is to run it down under the scuff plates and so on to the dash. Sound alright?

Ive done the exact same thing about a month ago..
For the speakers, yeah just cut the material and slide them in. Screw in and they're good to go. As for the wiring, i brought mine through the porthole in the back seat, under the seats and then under the carpet until the dash.
Any Q's or for some pics, PM me.. happy to help.
Ok we've got the 6x9's, they come with a template for cutting it out, so that problem is solved, now its just a matter of working out where to run the wires :)
And it all happens tomorrow!:D

Run it under the scuff plates. take the seats out so u can put the wires through properly you will see how with the seats out. Its a pretty easy job.

Easier than running it down the centre under the carpet? I suppose I'll look at both ways, is the actual framing in the car designed at all as to where the rear speaker wires go, or is it just stick them where ever appears best?

Running down centre wont be as easy as puttin under sills. Plus having wires going throug ski hole not a good idea. If ya do the wires properly by taking the whole back seat out ya will see the best spot to run the wires down the sides.
Cheers, I'll try the sides first then, I'll let you guys know how I go, and hopefully it'll work first time :)
If you take the rear seats out (total of like 6 bolts) you'll see on the left AND right there are little plastic troughs where the wire runs go, in my car I have the speaker wire and RCA's going down the drivers and the power and signal for amp(s) going down the left side thus removing any possibility of alternator whine or engine noise.
If there is any power wires make sure you run your speaker and signal wires down the opposite side, sure it takes longer but it's worth it!
As for the 6x9's in the boot, the wires can be run under the cover for the rear seat down to the left or right side, easy peasy, under the door sills (Scuff plates) and around the foot well onto the back of the HU. If you want to amp them later make sure to run 12g wire now so you can use this wire later for the fronts and just solder more on as the 6x9's will only use a little wire when the amp is in the back (not somewhere stupid like under the seats).
Thanks for all that nick.
We're only going to use the wiring that came with the speakers because there is no intention of ever amping it all up. After this, the only change thats likely to occur is the fronts, which will remain the stocks for now, but will be probably replaced by some pioneer co-ax 4" or something before the end of the year. As you've probably noticed we're not going high tech on this, its just basic for some better sound and cd playback :)
When I've got my 3rd gen (coming, sooner or later), thats when I'll need assistance on how to run amps and subs and whatever :D
Thanks again.

In my seat it only has three bolts.
I would definately replace those ones in the dash.
Either put new 4" in there more trouble than its worth. some cut involved.
Or put 6" in the front doors. As i will be doing in a week.
You can have my Pioneer 4" then if ya like.
I have my tweeters in the stock dash grilles and the woofers in the doors. It's an easy thing to hook up, just as easy as 2ways.
My rear seat has 5 bolts. nar nar.
Ok, its all in, and god damn they kick out a lot of bass.......was shaking the roof of the carport, and thats something, considering our Camry has 6x9 speakers front and back and it doesn't do that. For those interested to know, we put Sony XSGF6932X 3-Way 6x9's in.
Ended up running the speakers down the centre to the console, wasn't going to be enough cable to do it around the sides anyhow.

Ours has 5 bolts....
We're using the stocks atm in the front, with the fader set slightly to the rear and they work pretty damn good, the stocks seem to be functioning basically as tweeters haha. Spoke to M4DDOG a bit over a week ago about changing the fronts, from what his explained they don't sound very hard to change over.
What did you want for your Pioneers? Got a model handy? Cheers :D
Thanks a bunch guys, all your advice helped out heaps today! :P
