Did this a couple of months ago, never got around to postin it up.

Ok got this idea from Billy Mason PI so props and thanks to him :D

didnt want to spend 200+ for a xi chrome grill i investigated the possibilty of makin one, found Billys. All you do is cut the chrome stripping to size and stick it on, grill doesnt have to come off the car. U can only tell its DIY from real close (like the 2nd pic), coz i didnt get the angles spot on when cutting the end of the strips. The flexible stripping can be bout from supercheap for 20 buks, its the stuff that some people stick on their wheel arches. Comes with a sticky backing so it really is just measure cut peel and stick.

If you really wanted, i spose u could take the grill off the car and cut all the horizontal plastic out to make it look alot smoother, but that was alot more effort than i was willing to go to :D

Not bad for a home job at all!

Though i still prefer the KJ grille, mainly because it flows with the bonnet into the bumper (no gaps).

Looks pretty good! I should say that I originally got the idea from former member BillionaireBoysClub because he did it to his TE or TF grill. But yeah, looks great for $20.

Looks great, but I reckon it looks as though its missing something.

What you should do I think is get a chrome TL badge, and stick it right in the middle of that nose, would finish it off perfectly I think! :D

Nice dude... its looks close enough to a KJ grill, but also different enough to actually be quite cool! Especially just for a passing look rather than a close inspection, good stuff!

There's a plain chrome strip too. It should be right next to or behind the chrome/black rubber type. Just ask at the counter, they'll understand. I think from memory the chrome only is 4m or 5m. It's not the same length as the other one.

BTW reup, how is holding up after a week or so. Any of it fallen off? Still looking good?

Hey dude, the pics in this thread were taken about a month after i put it on, so its holdin up bloody awesome :D it doesnt fall off coz its really light and tha bak is really sticky (need to pull it off with alot of force if u want it off, but the good thing is that it doesnt hav ne residue!) the only thing wrong with it is on the long strip i put along the front of the grill, theres "cracks", if u look real close u can see little stretch marks on the corners, but iv got heaps more of the stripping (like more then 3/4 of the roll) so every time i wash my car il replace the front strip.

to jstyl, one supercheap i went too only had the stuff with the black, and swore to me on their mothers grave that it didnt come in 10 mil with no black rubber, but then another supercheap had it in stock  il get u exactly what its called if u want and u can tell em that they do sell it lol

looks good man.

what do you think about horizontal instead of vertical?

I've toying with a billet style grille
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/streetbeatcustoms_1971_833010697

or a Ralliart style grille... if I can make a billet style for $20 that'd rock.

cheers,

yeh i was really seriously considering this, coz the way the tj grills go, u could stick the stripping on the angled vertical bits (like mine) or on the horizontal bits. I reckon itd look pretty dope, if u do it, make sur u let us kno!

I've noticed that the charcoal coating of my grill has come off in a few places, thanks to
stone chips, and guess whats underneath the charcoal paint? Its chrome, shiny chrome. I
guess what they did was to fit Xi grills painted over with charcoal paint. Mentioned to the
wife that I'm thinking of carefully pealing off the charcoal paint.

I have noticed this with a lot of cars, mainly discovered it on hilux's. a lot of cars have a black bit of the grill go around the head lights that often is chrome under it. I believe they just chrome the whole thing then paint over the bit around the lights because of safety reasons?

Cousin wanted to steal my 4runner surf bumper and grill and then we realised we could beat the black outa his bumper and itd be almost the same (lot as high but)

Anyway on hilux's it comes of with some elbow grease and some thinner.

Oh yeah I love mini trucks, I don’t have a truck like the mates but I got the bags ;)

Rekon this will work on a TL? Can you get shiny black stick on **** or just the chrome?

I reckon it would definitely work with a TL, I've recommended it to mates who have just picked them up. I've used chrome pinstriping tape on my KS grille, it's about $15 for something like 10m worth, don't know about the stuff these guys are using, but the tape works really well for mine. Looks like it should also work well on a TL. Because it has a backing tape, you can cut it to almost the right size and shape, match it up to the grille, and "edit" it before peeling and sticking.http://baudalign.com/lee/pics/rogueChromeGrille.jpg(sorry, best pic I've got at the moment)
