View Full Version : Good splits for mainly metal/rock/emo/etc for around $200~250?
Looking for some decent splits for my TJ. I mainly listen to heavier music (Alexisonfire, Parkway Drive, etc etc) but then again I also do dabble in some Rap/Hiphop (trying to expand my collection and it suits driving :P). Im not sure if there is really much of a difference in splits for different types of music?
Anyway, im after some and hopefully not looking to spend much more than $200-250. Im not an audiophile, but i do enjoy my music alot. So whilst i dont want to get a ridiculously top-line expensive set, i also dont want to cop out. Is that much to spend too low? Anyone got any recommendations?
Im in SE Suburbs of Melbourne so yeah. Thanks for any advice!

g/l getting a set of TRUE focals for 200-250
VDO dayton splits are supposed to be good bang for buck
as with jaycar response
alpine and most of the others don't fall into your price bracket
lol emo
Nothing else to call it. People these days are idiots and even though there are a million better ways to classify music people will still call it 'emo' just because theyre idiots.
Thanks for the advice guys, i guess ill just have to have a shop around and see what I can find, maybe get something on special...

hey mate im in the same boat as you. love music but not that much into it all the sound stuff. got me a set Kicker ES 6 inch splits of a forum member for $150 and they are awesome. i listen to mainly RnB, Rap/hipHop and the occasional house (NEVER EVER PLAY EMO STUFF lol) and they are just great. at the moment i have them running of my HU and ye im pretty impressed with the sound quality but obviously will be better when i get them amped.
or maybe try jaycar splits. i hear very good things about them and should be within your budget.

Jaycar aren't bad for dance/trance etc., but not sure if they'd be able to keep up with some heavy mid bass, i'm also in the SE suburbs of melbourne and own a TJ, so if you wanted to meet up and bring a cd of yours and have a listen to the jaycars, that will help you decide,
I have to head in to the city today for uni so i might pop in to the jaycar there and just have a look around, get a feel for stuff. Ill probably end up impulse buying haha

Don't buy from a jaycar shop, Megatron on these forums can get you them cheaper.
Don't forget the power of bartering when in a car audio shop. Eclipse have decent mid-bass, I bought MB Quart and they're very nice, not the most mid-bass strong splits but they're bright and i like top-end, you could try some MBQ reference, or perhaps even Herts.
I listen to lots, lately into some aussie hiphop but mostly ska to metalcore.

Haha, it doesnt matter anyway. I went into the jaycar and it was bloody packed, and i couldnt find the car stereo section anyway

Yeah, i managed to get $20 off my headunit which was already on sale simply because I asked :)
I have another mate who is looking to buy splits and i think a few other things, so i may go with him and see if I can bundle my stuff together with his and get it cheaper.

Leave the jaycar, look at better splits and be happy. Hertz / Boston / Morel should do nicely.

depends tho, at that budget ur talking entry level morel, and may not stack up as good against other brands when talking about the music genre stated. Ie rather than mellow sounds, OP probably wants it bassy and punchy

I would prefer the Boston / Hertz / Vibe really because yeah the Morel / PG / Focal all seem to be for softer non emo genres lol :bowrofl: Just an idea, anything but Jaycar if he is willing to spend a little more!!
Okay everyone get past the emo thing :P lets just say i listen to all types of music
I'd really prefer not to spend more than $250, thats the cap I will go to, but if I can get away with less.....

I have a set of MTX splits that cost me $170... They work hard and they play hard...
Hmm, well... ive struck kind of a dilemma in terms of money etc. At the moment I have a sub (a fairly crap one though, but it was free! has a built in amp) and a headunit, so im just looking to get speakers. Most people say definately go for splits, but they're more expensive then just getting normal 6's for the front. Initially I was gonna go for splits in the front and just leave the rear speakers stock, but now im not sure.
My mate seems to think id just be better off getting 6's for the front and 6x9's for the rear, which would probably cost near the same price as getting splits. My headunit also doesnt support having an amp for the front speakers (!?) which also defeats the purpose of getting something like splits as they would be able to be used to their full potential...?
I dont know alot about this stuff and most websites regarding it use too many technical terms :P

you have a TJ, installing splits is a piece of piss ;) you will notice alot better sound quality since the treble is kept seperate from the mid, and at a better location.
your mate doesnt know much if he doesnt support the splits, sorry to say :P

Its not that he doesnt support the splits. Its just if i got splits, i probably wont have enough monies left to buy speakers to put in the rear, nor can I amplify the front ones. Will it sound like complete ass if i have splits in the front and the TJ stockies in the rear? Down the line I could upgrade the rear I guess.

yeah wont be a problem, would u still be able to amp the splits or not at all? all you'd have to do is just fade it alot more to the front (say 80% towards the front).
you could maybe buy the jaycar 4CH amp now, amp the front splits, and wait till you can replace the 6x9s and amp the new ones.
or maybe save a lil bit more and just do it all at once. cheapo do-the-job 6x9s are around $100, Jaycar 4x100W amp is $240, then atleast $130 for splits (will buy u response splits)... so ~$500 all up, all amped and good to go

I cant amp the splits? As far as I know my headunit doesnt have the output thingy to get be able to amp the front (my headunit is a JVC KD-PDR35 (http://www.jvc-australia.com/JVC/client/c_products_details.jsp?catID=27&prodID=237)). I dont know much about it but thats what the guy said when i bought it (maybe i shouldnt have done such an impulse buy heh).

true it does say rear/sub.... hmmm damn cheapass HUs :P
actually if you ran a 4CH off that you should be fine, just using the fader controls on the amp... i think :)
haha
well, its hard, im only 18 and at uni etc. firstly i dont have heaps of money to spend and secondly i dont really want to spend that much
So do you still think I should get the splits? Or just some more basic stuff seeing as the front cant be amped properly.
Sorry about all this, its just hard getting into this thing when there is alot of technical jargon being thrown around :P

i agree 100% with getting splits as it is better quality but to be perfectly honest i have a set of 5 1/4 2 way jbl front speakers and 6x9 jbl rears which i bought both pairs for $200ish on special, theyre running straight off an alpine head unit and it sounds quite good, obviously i know a nice set of amped splits and a sub would sound better but value for money it sounds pretty damn nice
so you agree with me getting splits if its amped, but you also say that your normal speakers sound good running off the h/u. Doesnt really help me haha lol

i agree that amped splits would sound great but i have speakers running off the head unit and i guess its cos theyre good speakers and a good head unit but they sound quite good and on a budget are good enough

I would definitely recommend getting splits, sound quality will be much better, and you can get them for your budget. good asking for advice though, a set of $200 speakers can sound better than a different set of $500 speakers. For your budget, I would recommend either Jaycar splits, no experience but heard A LOT from real 'experts', and also these Pioneers:
http://www.pioneer.com.au/products/car_entertainment/Speakers/TS_A_Speaker_Range/index.html
dont be put off by the price, I always see these splits for under $300, so either find them on special, or bargain down from store to store. Some people say otherwise, but there seems to be a high mark up on Pioneers, so you can find some TRUE pioneer splits for cheap on ebay. I got the model up, which were RRP 599 at the time for 250. This model on ebay would probably be just over 200.
People have been recommending Eclipse and Focal, and yes they are very good speakers, I have some excellent Focal splits in my car, but I doubt you could find these in your budget, but if you can find them, or can afford them, I would definitely recommend them.
EDIT: Ummn dont think that link is linking to the correct speakers, its the TS-C1625 that you want
Ollie
Ok, thanks everyone for the help :D
Just about to head off to uni - hopefully my lecture finishes early so i can scope out some stuff :)
Got the Jaycar 6.5" Precision Response Kevlar splits, got a $10 student discount so only $135 :D considering i was thinking of paying $200~ im very happy!
Edit: Now the question is... what speakers, if any, do i get for the back? Can i pick up some cheap 6" that will do a better job than the stock ones?

Bout time you got something. They should go alright.
You will need 6x9's in the rear of your car. A decent pair should cost around $100 but if you are getting a sub there is no need to go all out.

also, to make life easier for the install, buy the verada delta pieces (the plastic on the inside of your side mirror bit)... these have a hole for the stock verada tweeters, so should make install alot easier and cleaner :)
part number is floating around the forums a lil, do a search and u'll find em. only like $25 or something for them i think. grab em if ur doing a diy install :)

I checked this out last night when searching for tips about installing the tweeters :) thanks anyway though, ill definately do it. Makes it look really neat.
Yeah 6x9 2ways are good for rear fill, i'm running 3ways but do what i say, not what i do..
I'm jealous of the tweeter plastics you 3rd genners got, mine are zip-tied under the stock dash grilles but it seems to be a good spot anyway..
