Hey guys, sports steering wheel prices have been dropping lately and im really tempted to grab one for my TR. It would look pretty sweet, and should feel even better.

What loses me though, is how on earth I install it? Can it be done by me, or does it have to be a professional? Also, is it legal? I dont have an airbag, so...

most likely will need a BOSS kit i think, then the install is pretty straight forward, as for legalities i have no idea :)

Na man... if u don't have an airbag set up, there should be no trouble, with legalities, as long as u can still use the horn, and if u want u can buy a spacer with a red button (or 2) potruding of it, for the horn or whatever else u want really (that's if the steering wheel doesn't cater for a horn).

I know of ppl who have sports steering in cars with airbags, and i wouldn't say it's illegal, probably aint smart, like why take a safety feature out of a car??? but hey, ppl have done crazier things. Won't affect ur road worthy, on a car that was built BEFORE aribags became a minimum requirement, but after that, u might be up the creek. Though that's of no use to u at all really is it :P Ah well for future reference then.

Aftermarket steering wheel will require a boss kit to fit to your car.

A horn switch must be equipped to the new steering wheel, your car is unroadworthy otherwise, therefore illegal.

Should your car have SRS airbags in the stock steering wheel, you may not modify or replace your steering wheel unless the replacement accommodates an ADR compliant SRS airbag. Again, failing to abide by this will result in your car being unroadworthy, therefore illegal.

Restrictions are in place depending on state regarding wheel diameter, Queensland (I'm fairly certain) requires the wheel to be 350mm diameter minimum. Should you fail to install a wheel under the State's minimum diameter, your car will be rendered unroadworthy, and as I've stated twice before, illegal.

I see.. good info, thanks guys.

Uhm.. for the horn replacement button, do you know if WA legislation requires the horn button to be on the wheel? or can i attach it somewhere else nearby (eg. dash).

Also, what is this boss kit? If it proves to be too much trouble for me to do, any old mechanic should do it easily right?

The wheel standards should be met, after all it is for sale in WA atm.. Its a Monza wheel from Auto Barn.

Hopefully this wont be much of a hassle.. haha

Looks like a pain in WA, phone call dosent hurt to confirm if you need to show them the modification.

If you are considering modifications to your vehicle or purchasing a modified vehicle you should discuss the modifications with the Department of Planning and Infrastructure Vehicle Licensing Section to check the modifications are approved. Contact DPI Vehicle Licensing by calling 13 11 56 or visit www.dpi.wa.gov.au.

Wouldn't that be absurdly expensive to source one? And aren't they airbagged? You've got SFA chance of getting that onto your column, even if the width of the wheel attachment bolt is appropriate...

not allowed to have any exposed metal on a wheel either

Yes and Yes.

Suggestion: Upgrade to a nice 3rd Gen wheel, alot cheaper and avoid airbag one

The wheel standards should be met, after all it is for sale in WA atm..NO!!

Half of the crap the is for sale at auto shops is illegal for road use.

Dunno about WA, but as Luci stated, in Qld the wheel has to be 350mm or greater diameter, and 95% of the sports wheels that I have seen are smaller than this; usually 320mm.
(Actual percentage figure based on rough guestimation:D ).

Get a 380 one, they're pretty much identical. And yeh should fit, not sure of the legal side of things, having an airbag that doesn't work.

Got one...it's boring to be honest. I get out from driving my car, then jump in dads, and the steering sheel's chunky and contoured. It's the perfect size too. It's not the look i'm worried about (and If i took the air-bag module out from it I wouldn't see why it'd be a problem seeing as my car had no airbag to begin with) its just that I can't find an aftermarket wheel that fits in my hands so well. lol

P.S- I'm not worried about price either, my hands get sore with the thin, flat steering wheels after a while. It's more for ergonomics that I'm after one. no price on comfort. lol.
